Another Fukushima Quake Would Mean US Evacuation, ‘Bye Bye Japan’

Award winning scientist says another 7.0 earthquake hitting Fukushima would mean US evacuations, ‘bye bye Japan’.

Award winning scientist David Suzuki has gone on record in a public talk posted online just days ago in saying that in the event of another seven or above earthquake, which he says has about a 95% chance of occurring over the next three years, it would mean a complete evacuation of North America and ‘bye bye Japan’.

“I have seen a paper which says that if in fact the fourth plant goes under in an earthquake and those rods are exposed, it’s bye bye Japan and everybody on the west coast of North America should evacuate,” he said.

As a recipient of 16 significant academic awards and a host of the popular CBC Television program entitled ‘The Nature of Things’, Suzuki was a headline speaker at the ”Letting in the Light” scientific symposium that was focused around water ecology at the University of Alberta. But instead of simply discussing marine or freshwater ecosystems, Suzuki began issuing a very serious warning regarding the future of Fukushima and its overall predicted consequences for the entire planet.

Specifically speaking to the nature of Fukushima’s ticking time bomb, Suzuki began the breakdown of the plant’s numerous threats with stating the very real concept that Fukushima is perhaps the largest threat to both humanity and the planet that we face in the immediate future.

“Fukushima is the most terrifying situation I can imagine,” he said before delving into the issue. ”Three out of the four plants were destroyed in the earthquake and in the tsunami. The fourth one has been so badly damaged that the fear is, if there’s another earthquake of a seven or above that, that building will go and then all hell breaks loose… And the probability of a seven or above earthquake in the next three years is over 95 per cent.”

And it’s that 95% chance of another seven or above earthquake within the next three years that signals a completely dark scenario. But, as right as Suzuki is on this entire issue, he is also forgetting of another threat — TEPCO’s mission to launch their cleanup operation of the Fukushima site.  Specifically, their move to begin the extraction of fuel rods from the fourth reactor at the plant as early as the middle of this month. It is here where we also see yet another looming danger in regards to the cleanup process that is expected to ultimately take decades: the possibility of two rods colliding and generating a massive release of radiation as a result.

Experts like Dr Helen Caldicott have spoken to the media on this subject in the past, stating that:

“Two rods could touch each other in this process which has been done before and there could be a fission reaction and a very large release of radiation.”

Ultimately, the fact of the matter is that the Fukushima plant is teetering on the equivalent of nuclear life support, and the notoriously incompetent plant operators at TEPCO are about to go in and perform surgery. In the event that Suzuki is right, and another earthquake hits within the next three years before TEPCO is able to perform a cleanup (which may very well be even more dangerous) and leads to a complete meltdown, it would absolutely lead to a radioactive disaster internationally — well beyond the United States.

But don’t count on your government health bodies to inform you of the risk, or even tell you how you can better prepare yourself. Instead, they will likely once again start shutting off their radiation counters and raising the allowable limits of radiation in the food supply. For now, it is up to us to prepare ourselves and our family — making an effort also to also spread the word and call on the public to demand action be taken in Fukushima under the guidance of top independent scientists.

    BillT,

Philippines isn’t looking like such a good idea anymore, is it.

Interestingly, 3 reactors at Fukushima have already have had *multiple* fuel rods touch – and the results were less than total cataclysm.

Multiple fuel rods at least partially melted, went to the bottom of the reactor vessel – and completely failed to explode.

The Fukushima hysteria club is giving the anti-nuclear movement a bad name. They need to remember the story of the Boy who Cried Wolf.

When the fuel removal program fails to create a nuclear Armageddon – then what?

A small dosage of reality to those who are genuinely frightened by all this hysteria – two rods touching together WILL NOT set off a criticality event. The rods will NOT burst into flame if exposed to air – they have been “cooling off” in a radioactivity sense for over 2 years now, and are generating smaller and smaller amounts of heat each day from short lived radioisotopes.

Pulling the rods out of the pool and putting them into dry cask storage is a VERY, VERY GOOD thing, because it will eliminate another source of leaking water – water that is contaminated with various radioactive elements. It will lower the radiation levels in the area, which can only be good.

Anti-nuke activists can and should point out the massive expense of cleanup, the fact that thousands of square miles in Japan will be too radioactive to live in for decades, the loss of public confidence in nuclear safety, etc. It is not necessary to shriek that “WERE ALL GOING TO DIE IN A GLOWING RADIOACTIVE HELL ANY MINUTE NOW!!” – because when that doesn’t happen you’re going to lose all semblance of credibility.

TEPCO and the government of Japan have shown that they are not up to the challenge of dismantling the plant and safely storing the rods……..

They can not even store water without radiation leaks…..

The world community needs to provide help and guidance to ensure this mess does not spin out of control… or more out of control than it already is..

Fortunately for BillT, the winds and ocean currents will take any radioactive materials towards North America, if there are any of any significance.

    Silent,

I can’t find a link right now, but I have read more than once, that the pool at #4 contained over 200 NEW fuel rods. Anyhow, judging from what I see on the ground, the international response, and the amount of resources Japan is pouring into this ongoing disaster. I am much more inclined to believe that the situation is far WORSE, than what we are being led to believe, rather than being better. Also, right from the get go, the situation always turned out to be closer to what the ‘hysteria club’ told us, than what was reported in the MSM.

    Time will tell, I guess.

Too much fear mongering and whining. This is like pilots. They dont crash the plane cause they dont wanna die. Zo they will be polite with the rods. I already said how to solve this Fukin Fukushima mess. Do one more cold war H bomb test. Light one off right in the middle of the complex, like Bikini Atoll. The while thing be all tidied up, no more stupid water tank farm and it will even sweep the driveway clear for you. Nonred to pay guys for 40 years leaning on shovels that glow. C’mon grow a.pair and get er done. In the 60s they lit one off every week.

Action, actually, it is BETTER than the US or Canada. Notice the radiation flows in the picture. The Philippines is off the map in the lower left hand corner. By the time it reaches us, it will have saturated the whole Pacific and be moving into the Atlantic.

And anything carried in the air will go directly over the US and never touch anywhere near me until it at least circles the globe once. You can thank the Jet Stream for that. Sorry to burst your bubble. ^_^

“In the 60s they lit one off every week.”

This is precisely what many in the medical community now believe to be the cause of the unprecedented rise in cancer. One in three men in North America can expect to get prostate cancer, and one in 4 women will have breast cancer.

Fortunately for the nuclear industry, the correlation is very difficult to prove.

Unit 4 storage pool contains over 1300 fuel rods with over 200 new rods including MOX (plutonium-infused mixed-oxide fuel). It’s a completely different mess than the other units with ‘spent’ uranium. But what do I know.

    David Suzuki’s credibility takes a nose dive…

  10. kickerbocker on Thu, 7th Nov 2013 9:11 am

Experts like Dr Helen Caldicott…Expert a what? FUD?

  11. KingM on Thu, 7th Nov 2013 12:01 pm

    Dumb fearmongering. Completely false.

  12. Orland on Thu, 7th Nov 2013 1:18 pm

The big boys in the west thought that the possibility of Qadaffi killing a few of his own people was enough to warrant their interference in a sovereign country’s business. Now that we have a legitimate threat to much of humanity they are sitting on their hands. Does anyone think their priorities may be skewed?

  13. Ghung on Thu, 7th Nov 2013 1:45 pm

A number of folks saying this is “fear mongering”, “completely false”, etc., and no citations, not one link, nothing… Any of you have a background in nuclear power? I do, and I’m very concerned.

    Ignorance begets denial, I suppose.

    @Ghung – NICE!
