Whether it’s fear of an impending apocalypse, not being able to find what they want at the supermarket or simply having more time, an increasing number of Australians are turning their hands to growing their own fruits and vegetables.
Landscaping and permaculture suppliers have reported an unprecedented demand over the past month from those with a sudden urge to become more self sufficient.
“The response has been really positive. People are really starting to wake up to the fact that the stuff that we have been rabbiting on about for more than 20 years is starting to come to fruition. You need to build your own resilience,” Mark Brown who with partner Kate Beveridge run the six hectare Purple Pear Farm education centre and biodynamic farm near Maitland, NSW, said.
The huge demand for product prompted Australia’s largest online gardening club, Victorian-based Diggers Club to post a message on its website this week advising that it was not accepting new product orders.
Compounding the supply issue is the ongoing impact of drought for producers.
“We couldn’t grow any seedlings until we got water. Normally I would have a lot more food in the ground but we are struggling ourselves for seedlings,” Ms Beveridge said.
“Bushfire drought and now this means for many people it’s quite a difficult time.”
Lachlan Storrie
Newcastle-based permaculture contractor Lachlan Storrie said he was struggling to source supplies for his business.
“People have just gone nuts for everything from seeds, seedlings to fertilised eggs. Basically everything I need for my job. People are buying the stuff like their lives depend on it,” he said.

And it’s not just the raw materials, there’s also been a surge in interest from people who want to learn the basics of urban food production.
“I think for a lot of people it is something they have had an interest in, but they have been so busy they haven’t done anything about it. They are using this opportunity to take it up,” Ms Beveridge said.
But will the COVID-19-induced interest in growing food led to long-term shift in community attitudes to sustainability.
“A little bit of fear if managed correctly can be beneficial,” Mr Storrie said.
“People will have a memory of how things can go and they will try to live a bit more sustainably.”
Mr Brown shared that hope, but acknowledged he was also a realist.
I would definitely like to see a sustained interest in urban food production,” Mr Brown said.
“But the pessimist who lives within me looks back to the peak oil crisis and how Jimmy Carter and the White House were all gung-ho on sustainable fuel and then they went back to their old ways.”

The same thing is happening in the USA. All our farm’s suppliers are delivering late or not at all. The demand for food garden installations in Miami is completely unprecedented. Everybody wants to start growing veggies and raising chickens on their yards these days.
makati1 on Sat, 4th Apr 2020 11:22 pm
Good luck with that! How many Amerikans actually know what to do, have the tools and have soil that will grow veggies? Few, I bet. Three inches of worn out topsoil that grew crabgrass will not do. Not to mention that even the fastest veggies take months until harvest time.
Chickens require a lot of feed. Where do they buy that? With what money? And, again it takes months to raise a full grown chicken. One meal for a family.
Sounds like a lot of desperate people who used to put down preppers, will be asking them for help in the US.
Meanwhile, most Filipinos are already doing that as a part of their normal lifestyle here and know how and what to do. The people who worked on our farmhouse construction have their own rice fields, livestock and experience in self sufficiency. That is why the Philippines will bounce back fast and move forward. The US, not so much.

Not that I expect any food shortages in Holland. Gardening is just another opportunity to stay active.

Excellent points, Mak.
The other critical issue is who will now perform truck farm harvests? The State of Alabama in its infinite wisdom enacted the nation’s most punitive immigration enforcement with the idea of offering the state’s legal residents the opportunity of working in the fields, and a number of people signed-up. To a person, nobody lasted one day of work!!!! Americans are not accustomed to hard manual labor.
As a boy of 12, my first job was as a caddy at a private and exclusive country club for the WASP members of the city and metropolitan area. The Jews have their club as well as the Catholics. Even today, no Blacks, Asians, Latinos, are approved for membership. A full 18 holes of golf represented 5 hours of work to include carrying the member’s golf bag, spot the balls, and perform any other task specified. The word “no” did not exist in our vocabulary. Interestingly, the club hired ONLY German employees due to their discipline, hard work, and ability to follow orders. Oh, we were paid $5.00. Tips are strictly prohibited at private clubs. If the member was pleased with out work, we would be offered either a candy bar or a soda at the Ninth hole rest stop. These days, the club is unable to hire caddies at any price since nobody will do the work required so golf carts only.
DerHundistLos on Sun, 5th Apr 2020 1:01 am
I forgot a few things in my prior post.
The caddy would serve as both a traditional caddy, which involves involves carrying the member’s bag and walking with the player, although always behind. You never address the member and always do as instructed. On a few occasions, a member chucked his golf bag into the lake during a moment of frustration. We were expected to retrieve the bag and with a smile on our face.
We were also expected to serve as a fore-caddy, which involves running ahead of shots to spot the ball. So we were constantly running between spotting the ball and returning to the member.
Additional duties included but not limited to:
Raking bunkers and sand traps
Cleaning clubs and golf balls
Obtaining yardages
Replacing “divots” (chunks of grass)
Tending and removing the pin/flag
Any other member instruction.

Spend 6 months in your backyard trying to

After pumping in 500 hours of continuous
labor, you finally get 6 tomatoes, 3 of which
have worms in them.
Just buy food at Safeway. It’s easier.

Der, we agree that most Amerikans have no idea what “work” is. what it feels like to go home after 8-10 hours of hard labor with sore muscles and probably a sunburn. Not to mention minimum wages. I think that they are going to find out soon.
My second job out of school was as a mason’s helper. My day started an hour before the masons showed up, to build scaffolding, stock 10″ CMUs, (40# each if dry) and make the first batch of mortar. (A sack of cement weighs 94#) Humping block all day and wheeling mortar, not to mention moving scaffolding, makes for a tired young man of 21. Not to mention that I stayed after the masons left to clean up and prep for the next day. Rain or shine.
BUT, the plus was that I was more ‘in shape’ than ever before or after. I was paid $5/hr but no benefits, paid vacation, etc. Just work 6-7 days a week, except in winter.
My sister cannot even find a neighbor teen to mow her grass with a power mower, or do some yard work. Even at $10/hr.
I think ‘snowflakes’ are in for some real hurt before this is all over.

Fantastic Australian project:
All you need to create a vegetable oasis in the middle of the desert is a pipeline to the sea, a CSP-power station and simple thermal-based desalinization installation. No need for fossil fuel or ground water extraction. It is difficult to come up with a more sustainable solution than this. In this century we don’t need oil pipelines, we need sea-water pipelines to bring life to the desert.

But again, I can’t prove anything, so it remains a hypothesis-that-needs-testing, rather than accusing somebody, either China or some Anglo source.

Yes, Mak. Most people think growing veggies is easier than it actually is. It takes a few years for most people to become good at it, though a few will do okay in their first year if they know how to follow instructions well. It takes around 6 months for a baby chick to start laying eggs. While you can eat a few things in less than a month like radishes, turnips, and baby greens, most things will take months to be productive, but I am happy about this new interest on the subject. There was a growing interest in this in 2008, and for quite some people it became a permanent thing, though most gave up after a year or two.

Cloggo, I have around 10 articles I can post if that is what you want to show my point. These have been posted already so this represent redundancy but clearly you did not read them or you are trying in vain to make the situation look like you have hope to save the Chinese from a world ending embarrassment for them. When this all comes out the world is going to hate Chinese for what they have done. There will not be a person who has not been touched by loss. OH, stupid, yea this could have happened in the US, EU, or India because they play around with viruses too. It happened in sloppy China and it was lied about and covered up and now the world has been ruined and no place worse than your EU which is going to break apart.

An article I read yesterday noted that: “…if there was no fuss made over this ‘new’ flu, only the specialists might have noticed.” True!
Those few thousand deaths would have been included in the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year.
When this flu kills a few hundred thousand alone, then I will agree it might be worse. But, if the world economy never shut down for the hundreds of thousands of deaths each year, why now?
There is more to this story then COVID-19 deaths. Wait and see.
