Who Killed Economic Growth

Richard Heinberg propose a startling diagnosis: humanity has reached a fundamental turning point in its economic history. The expansionary trajectory of industrial civilization is colliding with non-negotiable natural limits.

** Please understand that we fit all we could into a five minute video. Yes, there are many issues and nuances left out. You’ll find most addressed in the book from which this material was excerpted: http://www.endofgrowth.com ***

“Why have mainstream economists ignored environmental limits for so long? If Heinberg is right, they will have much explaining to do.” — LESTER BROWN, Founder Earth Policy Institute

“Heinberg shows how peak oil, peak water, peak food, etc. lead not only to the end of growth, but to the beginning of a new era of progress without growth.” — HERMAN E. DALY, Professor Emeritus, School of Public Policy, University of Maryland

“By the time you finish Heinberg’s book, you will have 2 conclusions: This is the end of economic growth and it is our problem, not our childrens’. It’s time to get ready. This book is the place to start.” — PAUL GILDING — Former head of Greenpeace International

“Richard has rung the bell on the limits to growth. Our shift from quantity of consumption to quality of life is the great challenge of our generation. Frightening…but ultimately freeing.” — JOHN FULLERTON – President and Founder, Capital Institute

I would say that main stream economists ignored it because it said that their end was near and that all that they were taught in college was soon going to be useless, along with the Capitalist system of finance.

The internet has opened up that can of worms for all to see who want to know what is going on in the real world. Sadly, too many still want to deny it.

BTW: Have you ever wondered why in the last 30 years, EVERYTHING in finance has been aimed at the wealthy getting everything, or as much control as possible, BEFORE it collapses? I think they knew then, but hid it from the peasants…

We have a food crisis, a water crisis, an oil crisis, an energy crisis, a financial crisis and a jobs crisis. The worlds ever growing population will exceed the limited resources. We could not solve the worlds problems of poverty, suffering and despair when the world had 5 billion people and adequate resources. We will have more poverty, suffering and despair in a world of 9 billion people and limited resources.
Endless world population growth is not sustainable. It will only create more suffering.

    Gentlemen,

Last time I checked the global economy was growing. In fact, emerging economies are growing very fast. The US economy will probably hit a 3% annualized rate in 4Q11.

A lot of you spend too much at Apocalyptic web sites and reading the Oil Drum.

Peak oil is real, but it is not the end of the world.
