Ukrainians told to save natural gas to survive winter

The head of Naftogaz of Ukraine, Andrei Kobolev, urged the Ukrainian citizens to save gas, as the country may have problems with the fuel in winter.

According to Koboleva, the failed negotiations with Russia could lead to the shortage of six billion cubic meters of natural gas. To avoid the disaster, the population should save about four billion cubic meters.

Kobolev explained that it would be easy to save fuel with the help of such simple measures such as control handles on radiators and reasonable use of heating power. Kobolev previously stated that Ukraine would be able to survive the upcoming winter without Russian natural gas by reducing the consumption of about 6 billion cubic meters during the season.

On June 16, after several weeks of fruitless negotiations, Russia’s Gazprom introduced the prepayment system in gas supply to Ukraine.

How much conserving of NG will Kobolev himself achieve this coming winter?

When the Russians aren’t invading Ukraine they are busy cutting off gas supplies to Ukraine. No wonder the Ukrainians want to turn towards the west and leave Russia behind.

Yes but what about Europe? Doesn’t the gas for Europe have to come through the Ukraine? If Ukraine is not getting it than how is Europe going to get it?

Plant, turn your sark font off! Russia didn’t invade and only turned the gas off due to lack of payment.

steve, Europe is in the same situation. If the Russians cannot get gas all the way to Europe through Ukraine, then it will be turned off. It is up to the EU, basically Germany, to control their US partner’s man in Kiev. Russia holds ALL the good cards in this game and they know it.

I guess Kiev got the message that American LNG was not coming for a few years, or never … lol.

Mak, Russia holds a bag of shit. That is what a potential failed state the size of Ukraine is to Russia. Mak, get a grip man and put away your rose colored glasses.

Makati is right here, Davy. The Ukraine is unimportant and Russia indeed has all the cards in this standoff, as long as they don’t take the bait and come to the aid of Novorossia, which they won’t. The Germans in vast majority are pro-Russia… because they realize on which side their bread is buttered and that nobody can replace Russian fuel supplies. The US meddling in the Ukraine has the purpose of attempting to drive a wedge between Europe and Russia and thus keep Europe as a US protectorate. All the signs are that this is not succeeding. I think that just like the 2004 Orange revolution, the 2014 Maidan revolution is going to stall and the Ukrainians will start to realize AGAIN that they have been used by the west as a dispensable pawn, just like Poland in 1939 and that they will receive no substantial aid from the treacherous west… so they have to turn to Mother Russia again, to pulleeze get some fuel for the harsh winter. And Russia will deliver, provided…

Steve, Germany is safe thanks to North-Stream, a direct pipeline between Viborg-Russia and Germany, conveniently circumventing Ukraine, Poland and similar inconveniences in life, that was build to avoid the consequences of situations we are witnessing now.

Merkel still shakes hands with Wlad, were former chancellor Schroeder even hugs him. Germany tries to balance between Russia and the US but at some point could be forced to choose.

Art the bag of shit is a basket case Ukraine at best or a collapsed failed state at worst. That is no cards to be holding even if this bag of shit turns out to be the less stinky variety. If Russia is lucky parts of Ukraine may fall into Russian protection and influence this winter when the gas war really heats up. How can Ukraine survive a winter without adequate gas? The days of the US protectorate for Europe are nearly over and we will soon be moving the boy’s home with the next economic downturn and new administration. We as Americans love Europe but are sick and tired of supporting their security with very little to show for it. I firmly agree Germany should embrace Russia it is a match made in heaven. But the facts remain for Europe and Russia there is an unstable large area and population in the middle of the two that will be a destabilizing influence that will require a great deal of effort and treasure. IMA in a time of limits of growth, diminishing returns, and overshoot. This is not a good prescription with or without a meddling US.

Yes but remember the last time this happened? I wish we would bring our troops back….it is time to let the rest of the world fight it out for themselves….I am sick of people blaming America for all the worlds ills….once we are gone that is it..if China invades or takes territory from other countries….{which it will have to-grow or die} than so be it…Canadians might not like it but they are stuck with the U.S and Mexico…Globalization will die very quickly…on the downward slide..

Davy – While I agree that “with or without U.S. meddling,” future prospects don’t look particularly rosy, I’m not convinced that U.S.-E.U. cooperation has been totally without benefits for either side. Cross-Atlantic investments (at least SOME job creation) were a little north or south of $3 trillion in BOTH directions last year.

Still, I have no difficulty imagining some kind of an ‘eastern pivot’ occurring in Germany at some point. Whether or not it would be “a match made in heaven” is another question. Not sure those still exist anymore, if they ever did. Also not sure France would quickly follow in those footsteps, as suggested by someone here recently (was that you, Arthur?)

  12. Davy on Tue, 8th Jul 2014 8:14 pm

Gav, my thoughts were on the military commitment from the US was an illusion of benefit for the US. The economic benefits will remain large until BAU diminishes and regionalism takes over if the contraction is manageable. Russia is too small a market for Europe as an alternative to North America as you know. The reality is Europe needs energy and Russia has it. Russia was smart to diversify to the East but the East can never replace the European market especially considering the infrastructure sunk investment. It will not be long and the capex for vast pipelines crossing parts of continents will be too expensive.

Yes J-Gav, that was me. For the record…. I do NOT advocate blowing up the trans-Atlantic relationship, far from it. But it needs to be redefined on a ‘1776 footing’ rather than a ‘1945 footing’. And in order to achieve that, the ‘special relationship’ US-UK needs to be replaced by an alliance between continental Europe and continental America, just like in 1776.

Marine le Pen, the coming anti-Islamic Jeanne d’Arc, has already announced she wants to follow in the footsteps of de Gaulle and turn to Moscow. So will the Germans. According to the Worldbank, the Chinese economy could overtake the US economy this year already. We are talking about 1.3 billion people here. That fact alone will force a Paris-Berlin-Moscow military alliance of 700 million into being all by itself. Russia is desperate for such an alliance. Furthermore, we Europeans must ensure that the US does not go astray again like it did in 1933, when it teamed up with the Soviets in an anti-European alliance and repeats that stunt with the Chinese in the near future, an absolute nightmare.
