Tristram Stuart: The global food waste scandal

Western countries throw out nearly half of their food, not because it’s inedible — but because it doesn’t look appealing. Tristram Stuart delves into the shocking data of wasted food, calling for a more responsible use of global resources.

Tristram Stuart sounds the warning bell on global food waste, calling for us to change the systems whereby large quantities of produce and other foods end up in trash heaps.

Tristram Stuart sounds the warning bell on global food waste, calling for us to change the systems whereby large quantities of produce and other foods end up in trash heaps.

Why you should listen to him:

Western countries waste up to half of their food. This is an injustice Tristram Stuart has dedicated his career to fixing. In his newest book, Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal, Tristram shows how changing the systems that result in food waste could be one of the simplest ways to reduce pressure on the environment.

The winner of the international environmental award The Sophie Prize in 2011, Tristram is the founder of Feeding the 5000, a consciousness raising campaign where 5000 members of the public are given a free lunch using only ingredients that otherwise would have been wasted. Held in Trafalgar Square in 2009 and 2011, the event has also been held internationally.

If Tristam Stuart wants to eat crappy looking food, then thats his business. Personally, I like my food to be clean and fresh and look appetizing.

After last summer’s draught here in North America there was a notable difference in both the price, and the quality, of the produce in our grocery stores. I suspect that this trend will continue into the future as climate change kicks in even more.

Planet … be careful what you say. You may be going through dumpsters someday, looking for ANYTHING edible. Those ‘appetizing’ veggies and fruits are the product of poisons and death. Every bite is another dose of Monsanto or Dow poison. I’ll take blemished heirloom veggies and fruits every time!

Myself, I think railing against the food waste problem is sort of futile. Yes, it’s a real, problem, even a serious one. But since massive food waste is almost ‘baked’ in our food system, I don’t see how we can do more than ‘nibble’ away at the problem…..

Put another way, an inherently wasteful food production and distribution system is going to waste a lot of food. Until the system is forced to change over to a less wasteful way of doing business, mass food wastage will always a feature sorry to say.

When you pick it yourself, little is wasted.

When the farmer picks it and sells it direct to you, little is wasted.

When it is factory farmed, the waste begins in the field and increases with every change of hands which could be 20 times and many thousands of miles from farm to plate.

And, Americans, being spoiled, want ‘perfect’ looking everything, even if it tastes like cardboard. You can buy perfect fruits and veggies in Japan … if you want to pay $10 for a peach or $20 for a melon.

I can buy a pound of Dole tomatoes here for $3, or a pound of Philippine native tomatoes for $0.50 and the Philippine tomatoes actually have a tomato taste. Yes, they are smaller and not perfect, but…

    @Plantshit

    Wow. You people.

You have no respect for food, or the people who grow it, or for life. Millions that are starving around the globe, while bastards like you throw out perfectly good food.

    I hope you starve.
