Peak Oil? Unlikely In The Near Term

Consumption

WTI: surges 10% on Boxing Day.

Peak oil? Maybe for Saudi Arabia? One of my themes over at “the big stories” is the growing gap between Europe and the US when it comes to being energy sufficient. Major sub-themes include:

  • US energy centers of gravity
  • natural gas and coal in the post-nuclear world
  • the Saudi – OPEC myth
  • Japan’s energy crunch

But one of the sub-themes I follow often is “Europe at a tipping point.”

I was reminded of that when I came across this oilprice headline: US oil output will nearly equal Saudi and Russian production combined by 2025.

2025?

Are you kidding?

As far as politics go, it’s already 2020.

2025 is only five years from 2020.

That means that I will (most likely) live to see that milestone.

The prediction is from the IEA chief.

My hunch is that it is “fake news.” The IEA chief is beating the drum to increase CAPEX spending on conventional oil — or in other words, increase spending in the Mideast and Russia, and not the US. This is another shout-out to the Saudis and the Russians that they need to accelerate oil activity in their own backyards if they don’t want to be over-shadowed by the US.

But if he’s accurate … wow!

    Over 900 different regions and subfuel situations were modeled using three URR scenarios of Low, High, and Best Guess. All three scenarios indicate that the consistent strong growth in world fossil fuel production is likely to cease after 2025.     Do you see yourself surviving in said scenario?, would you like to share a thought here as to how you would go about surviving or easing human suffering if this is inevitable?

    Indeed, US will produce more oil in 2025 than Russia and KSA combined.

    Don’t know if that is true, but I would not be surprised, provided of course that Trump will be elected for a second term, the US keeps refusing to subscribe to Paris and CW2-troubles can be postponed until 2025. A country in a civil war usually doesn’t produce much of anything.

    LONDON—Global oil discoveries fell to a record low in 2016, the International Energy Agency says, raising fresh concerns about the potential for a petroleum-supply shortage as soon as 2020.

    Don’t expect output from U.S. shale producers to fill the void, the IEA said. American shale production is expected to grow by 2.3 million barrels a day or more over the next five years, but that isn’t enough to make up for declining output elsewhere.

    The IEA also doesn’t expect global oil demand to stop growing any time soon, potentially turning the current glut of oil into a dearth.

    The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has also sounded the alarm over the potential for a looming supply gap in the long term. Saudi energy minister Khalid al-Falih told a London energy conference last year that “there will be a period of shortage of supply.”

    The End of the Oil Age is Imminent!

    Recently, the HSBC oil report stated that 80% of conventional oil fields were declining at a rate of 5-7% per year. This means that there will be an oil shortage of ~30 million barrels per day by 2030 and ~40 million barrels per day by 2040.

    Now, this problem has nothing to do with the recent decline in the oil price, which started in 2014. This has been an on-going problem for the past 30 years. Now, the IEA is predicting oil shortages by ~2020 due to declining exploration.

    Here, the IEA blames this problem on the low oil price. But, this problem started in the 1980s. The problem is geological: we are running out of conventional cheap oil. Shale and tar sands are not the answer, either. Those resources are far too expensive, compared to conventional oil, because the global economy is based on cheap conventional oil. Expensive oil is not a replacement for cheap oil.

    Based upon the HSBC report and the IEA, the End of Oil Age will start around ~2020: there will be a dramatic economic depression due to exhaustion of cheap oil. This will cause a global economic collapse.

    The Mob – I can’t blame you for not understanding the exploration process. The MSM et al keep repeating the same bullshit. I’ve hunted for oil for more then 4 decades: finding oil/NG reservoirs have never been easier thanks to huge increases in technology. I know that will be difficult for you and others to accept. But you’ve never looked for hydrocarbon traps, have you?

    The problem is that there much fewer and MUCH SMALLER undiscovered fields left to find. And given our very much improved exploration tech over the last 50 years it means the situation is much worse then your post implies. Had we had the same tech we now have 50 years ago I promise we would have reached global PO long ago. Or put similarly were our current tech identical to what we had decades ago when so many huge fields were discovered there would be very few new oil/NG fields discovered now…much fewer then your post indicates.
