Is it time to freak out?

Is it time to freak out? thumbnail

Toilet paper? Have people lost their minds? Of course, I have wondered that many times even without the coronavirus scare, but it’s toilet paper that people are panic buying?

I seriously don’t get that, but there is a real threat from Covid-19. The most pressing and important long-term effect beyond the deaths that will occur is the economic disruption that will almost certainly lead to a recession. It could even get worse, and we could have a legitimate stock market crash. Perhaps worst of all, our medical care system is about to be put to a very significant test.

As we shut down society to help control the spread of the disease, we are also effectively shutting down the economy. Right now, people are panic-buying toilet paper, but what will be next? Doesn’t that point to a capacity within people to be absolutely ridiculous when threatened by any sort of crisis?

The answer is a resounding “yes,” and it points to the paper-thin line between normal life and full-blown panic. A single man can be very unpredictable. Mankind in its aggregate is extremely predictable and develops a kind of mob mentality, particularly in crisis, and that mentality is never good. Hoarding is a common response to crisis situations.

Think about how people panic-buy bread and milk when snow is in the forecast. The rational side of our minds understands that this is Alabama and snow doesn’t last here for more than a day or two. The irrational side of our mind sends us rushing immediately to the store for milk and bread.

The Covid-19 virus has been in the open for more than a month. Worldwide, there have been approximately 163,000 reported cases and slightly more than 6,000 deaths. That yields a death rate of about 3.7 percent. This makes Covid-19 far more deadly than the annual flu in terms of the death rate. Of course, that rate is somewhat inflated due to the disease being underreported. The actual death rate will be slightly lower, but, even then, that number would mean a substantial number of fatalities.

When the world population hovered around 1.8 billion people at the end of the Great War in 1918, the Spanish flu pandemic broke out. It lasted well into 1919 and claimed 50 million lives worldwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That epidemic had a mortality rate of about 2.7 percent. In the United States, 675,000 people died. The CDC said that approximately one-third of the world population was infected with Spanish flu.

Many people in the Spanish flu outbreak died at home and never went to a hospital or doctor’s office, particularly in rural parts of America and the world. In today’s society, people rush to doctors and hospitals, and that rush could easily turn into a torrent as it has in Italy, where the health care delivery system has been overwhelmed.

While shutting everything down may look like an overreaction, it is likely the best way to halt the rapid spread of the disease. None of us like the idea that the NCAA had to shut down its basketball tournament and call off all the spring sports. None of us like the NBA canceling the rest of the season or Major League Baseball suspending spring training and delaying the opening of the season. Many of us will be seriously inconvenienced by having to work from home or by having public schools and universities suspend their spring classes. Those precautions, however, are critical to stemming the tide of new infections.

U.S. hospitals in aggregate have only about 2.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people. Of those beds, only about 300,000 are available at any given time. It is easy to see how hospital capacity could easily be overwhelmed by Covid-19 patients. Further, the stockpile of medication and medical supplies would be quickly overtaxed by a huge influx of patients. Unfortunately, many of those supplies and medications are manufactured in China, where manufacturing has been seriously disrupted.

This leaves our health-care workers vulnerable as well as seriously undersupplied. Cancelling those sporting events and class schedules doesn’t seem like too great a sacrifice in light of those facts. I still don’t believe you should purchase every roll of toilet paper in the store; however, buying some essential items without freaking out would be a good decision. No one expects stores to shut down, so take it easy, be smart and do what the CDC is recommending.

The best way to treat Covid-19 is to avoid contracting Covid-19.

Ever since we transferred global production to China and limited our national budgets to supporting bullshit projects like the EUSSR, war, and corporate welfare we volunteered our resilience as the the price we would pay in a crisis. Unless you can literally lock yourself into your own home and live there for a year now, then you will have to run the gauntlet of contracting this virus. 10-15% of people of ALL ages who catch it WILL need hospitalization if you are young AND healthy you’ll be fine if you need a stay in hospital. In the aging and unhealthy west expect bad things to happen. For those so called liberals quietly giggling and hoping that the coronavirus is somehow a path to power once your elderly and fat overlords are dead I have this caveat. Your elderly and fat overlords have children. The scale and type of CHANGE about to unfold is practically impossible to conceive as a simple numbers game.
Most people likely to die will be as a result of triage carried out in waiting hospitals, the intubation and oxygen machines will be given to those most likely to live and or of most benefit to society. The choice will be between a junkie ex con antifa member or a wealthy political donor of 60 yr old. The revolution will be delayed. Antiglobalisation will be the answer. China was able to delay covid 19 at great cost ( and is not out of the woods) because it cut the world supply of pharmaceutical and medical machines and used it to save itself. We need to supply our own goods medical and more to rebuild resilience in our own society’s. The low skilled, migrants reliant, low cost food production services economic model of globalization is literally killing us now. Kill globalism, Trump’s political destiny might already be obvious but he was right that America needs to make things in America again.

The US is failed state, not even able to take care of its own, if they are not billionaires. But, soon, everyone will be a billionaire when Zimbabwe inflation takes hold and a loaf of bread costs a billion dollars. The opposite, deflation, will put the US back hundreds of years to a bartering level of survival. We shall see.

It is too late to panic. That time was back in 2008 when the great recession started and never ended. The US is one slip from a greater depression. Be patient.

BTW: all they are doing is trading government toilet paper for ass wipes. Maybe bartering has already begun?

I am far from starvation, Davy. I keep telling you that food grows wild all over the Philippines, not that I will likely ever need it with all the preps in the farm warehouse. Nor do I need electric if it gets that bad. Our house is designed to use gravity to move our water and cross ventilation for cooling, etc.. No electric required.

There is a chicken ranch, a piggery and a fish port all within walking distance of our farm. We are growing most of the things we will need in the future by planting fruit and nut trees and plants like bananas, cassava, pineapple, sweet potatoes, etc. all over our land and even the neighbor’s land.

You are the one who should be concerned. You have one growing season, we have a year round one. Your country is flooding again and the farmers are committing suicide in growing numbers. Your country is locking down your freedoms more and more. When this virus is over, will you be free? Hmm?

Duncan, many will be stuck where they are for a while. I think it is mostly hype, not fact, that it is so dangerous. Never in my 75+ years have I seen such ridiculous measures for a flu. Not even for polio, or any other of the real killer diseases of my youth.

Quarantine is too late when the virus horse is already out of the barn, as it obviously is. It has to run its course. All this is doing is causing panic and destroying economies and lives. More people are likely to die from being unprepared for the shut-in, not to mention the millions of homeless in the US that have no means to keep clean and sanitary.

I’m supposed to be at the top of the susceptible list because I am old. Now I am reading that that is not true, many younger people are also dying of the virus and/or its pneumonia sidekick. Yes, those with other health problems are more likely to die, but then, they would anyway. Cut off meds for all the diseases Amerikans suffer from and the death toll would be in the millions in months. China and India control those meds, but that is another story.

BTW: I’m in good health, but, if it is my time, so be it.

    Failed state – Wikipedia

“A failed state is a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly.”

Perfect description of Amerika today. Millions homeless, tens of millions on welfare, food stamps, etc., bridges/roads crumbling, antique railroads, antique airports, antique missile defense system, antique military, but the widest disparity in wealth ever seen.

A government owned by the oligarchs. A police state becoming more obvious daily. A thug nation of pirates, liars and hypocrisy. A virus on humanity. Soon to be put down by another virus, COVID-19. Or will it be COVID-20? We shall see.

The EU is not a country but a free union of sovereign states. England was never in for any other reason than try to destroy it from within… and failed and we got rid of them on the cheap because the UK elite was so careless to call a referendum.

The European unification process now exists for 70 years and has acquired ever new functions. The next function will be a military one and taking over from the US.

And we have very political incorrect Russia waiting in the wings…

No hurry, Putin will be around until 2036 and that is more than enough for the intended geopolitical transformation:

    – Australia becoming Chinese
    – Scotland independent and in the EU
    – Irish unification
    – Caliphate London
    – Gibraltar to Spain
    – Balkanized USA with Heartland junior partner PBM
    – Quebec to France
    – England can play Anglo-Canadian overlord, but for the rest economically (but not politically) integrated in PBM after a Glorious Revolution 2.0, meaning this time not Holland conquering the lot via Devon…

    This is what to expect:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8123677/The-dossier-horrified-British-experts.html

“The dossier that horrified British experts: It predicted up to 250,000 Britons could be killed and said coronavirus is the most serious respiratory virus since Spanish flu – read the warnings that made Boris Johnson change his strategy almost overnight”

As Merkel and our Dutch PM Rutte has said, 60-70% of the population will be infected. On the scale of the UK that would be 42 million. With a mortality of 250,000 that would be a mortality rate of 0.6%

    That sounds about right.

If you want to get rich from Corona, start a factory that can produce oxygen masks. Think of endless huge tents with stretchers (“ICUs”) and a grid of oxygen tubes, with people lying on their bellies for 1-2 weeks, near suffocation.

    42 million, with 80-90% hardly any symptoms, 10% hospitalization = 4 million.

    Assume a period of 12 months = 365 days.
10 days per patient (dead or walking).
    40 “slices”
    4 million/40 = 40,000 hospitalized patients on average

    https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/welfare-cuts-left-uk-undefended-coronavirus-200312193147678.html

according to figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UK has just 6.6 ICU beds per 100,000 people, compared with Germany’s 29.2, Italy’s 12.5 and France’s 9.7.

Britain has 4400 ICUs, a factor of 10 shortage, hence the Big Tent scenario.

No need to hope that any country will be better off than others. They won’t. In the end “herd immunity” is indeed the goal, under the assumption that a vaccine will be found in a year or so.

The only difference between nations is the way they will try to find an “optimum” between casualty rate and economic damage.

If we stretch out the pandemic through severe measures, a country like the UK will have a permanent hospital the size of a football stadium.

Expect that the entire 2020 will be busy trying to contain the crisis. There will be no tourism, no air-traffic, production will largely continue. There will be no food shortage. The highlights of 2020 will be a walk in the park and being online permanently.

Time to finally read that pile of unread books you have on your Kindle.

This is a battle of the bulge but in two dimensions. Dimension one is the healthcare system. Social distancing and quarantine are designed to flatten the bulge. Working in the other direction is the economics of a shut down. The bulge here can only be balanced but getting people back to doing things at a point. Keep in mind the longer a complex economy is in a shut down the more difficult the reboot to normal. What is worse this is global so even if a complex economy like China reboots it still must wait on the rest of the world to reboot. So, we have one chain going one way and another going the other. The difficult task is to balance the two. Fear and negative sentiment are bad for both directions and they negatively reinforce both apathy to quarantine for selfish reasons but also a lack of confidence to engage in economic activity. This is systematic so self-emergent results of billions of decisions. Finger pointing is normal but not of much use here. Really it is about science, math, and leadership. The leadership is for making tough choices. The science and math must guide these choices. All is not lost but everyone needs a wake-up call that life will not return to normal.

Normal is over and what the new normal is can only be found over time. It most likely will be poorer and with less comfort. In some places it will be worse. It is critical now that the degree and duration of these actions that are really opposing tensions must be navigated with a wisdom of triage. Triage with the acceptance of human death but also triage of economic activity. Some think this death rate is OK. You know survival of the fittest and clean out the old and sick but the fail to understand the 10% of the population that run every day vital things will be dying. These people are the human critical infrastructure that keeps a complex world of complicated systems going. So, what this means is yes, the medical bulge is critical but also the value chains supplying food and supplies in a globalized delocalized world are just important. What is needed now is a confidence and hope but also sacrifice and acceptance of hardship. I am not sure enough of the population cares anymore. Basic human values have been destroyed by the relative nature of globalism. Globalism brought us great riches and knowledge but personally I think it destroyed more because it does not scale to the planet so in effect it was a malinvestment like a typical Ponzi or asset bubble. In any case we are trapped in it so somehow, we must adapt it or collapse.

Finally some “good news” from Italy. The country seems to be near peak:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8123307/Italys-doctors-warn-catastrophic-situation-coronavirus-death-toll-rises-345-2-503.html

“Italy’s doctors warn of ‘catastrophic’ situation as coronavirus death toll rises 345 to 2,503 – but infections show signs of slowing”

Italy is like the UK. 250,000 casualties in a year would mean 5,000 deaths per week on average or 720 per day for the remainder of 2020. 345 is half of that. Perhaps Italy will stabilize on 400-500/day rather than 720. Warmer weather is probably beneficial as well.
