Good morning, it’s Saturday, Dec. 1, the 336th day of 2012. There are 30 days left in the year. We’ll start the day in the 60s and should warm up into the upper 70s this afternoon under a sunny sky. Temperatures overnight will drop into the upper 50s.
On December 1, 1942—70 years ago today–nationwide gasoline rationing went into effect in the United States. By the end of that year, half of the vehicles in the U.S. were issued “A” stickers, which allowed owners to purchase 4 gallons of gas a week. “B” stickers were issued to vehicle owners such as industrial workers whose driving was considered essential to the war effort. They were good for 8 gallons a week. “C” stickers were given to others considered essential to the war effort including doctors, ministers and mail carriers. VIPs including members of Congress received “X” stickers, which allowed for unlimited amounts.

It takes 4.8 gallons of gas for me to to go to work, get groceries and run other essential errands, per week. Because of the lay of the land, there is no sensible option for walking, using bicycle and public transportation is non-existent here. So I suppose if a 4 gallon per week limit were imposed now, I would be screwed.

one less trip to work, less grocery runs, carpool, lots of options.
A little sacrifice from everyone now, or major sacrifices in the future.

Diversify……
We depend too much on oil for transportation fuels.
Buy a bicycle, walk a little more or take mass transit. If that does not work there are many new high mileage options coming to market including electric, biofuel, hybrid, CNG, LNG and hydrogen fueled vehicles.

Ah, the good old days. But we will probably see them again in the near future either by price rationing or by a color or tag code as above.
I use maybe 1/2 gallon per month in taxis, and walk everywhere else, but just as you do, I’m not counting all the hauling between the farms/factories/warehouses, etc. that gets the stuff I buy to the local stores. That is probably many more gallons.
I do average 15 gallons per month to fly back to the US every 12-16 months. That is still only 1/2 gallon per day, down from my 2-3 gallon per day use when I lived in the Us.

I got 348 MPG in the first 16,000 miles in my Volt… probably the best Peak Oil preparation vehicle to own if you have to own a car…

MrEnergyCzar,
Tongue in cheek, I hope.
