Common sense says that food is rural. It must be produced locally by local farmers. I am not going to bother to go to his site and signup to read what I already know. Go back to the ages before mechanization and see how it works.
It is also how it works where I live. Most of the food is grown locally, in yards, fields, any place a plant can live, a chicken can scratch or a pig wallow.
In the US, land is wasted on grass. No grass here outside of a few places in the city in a business area or park. The “front lawn” at our rental is covered with sweet potato vines, not grass. The trees are coconut, mango, banana, and papaya. The bushes are pineapple. All food sources.
Who will live better when the collapse gets to that point? Hint: No the typical American.

I wonder how tasty but more importantly nutritious that food produced in those greenhouses is. And how sustainable are these things “year round” observing the massive amounts of fossil fuel (gas) they require?

Permaculture efforts must be part of the future. This includes the way of life of localized communities. This needs to be subsidized by the rest of the economy or at least not economically penalized as it currently is. Industrial Ag is very inefficient and very efficient. It produces a lot of food at a cheap cost but its overall cost is high to society and the planet. With the populations we have and the intransience of our powerful global economic system we can’t just leave Industrial Ag.
We can make efforts to lower the demands of industrial agriculture. Instead of the privilege industrial Ag gets because it’s so large and connected we need an effort made to tax those areas of industrial ag that are destructive to society and the planet. That revenue stream needs to be pumped back into a localized permaculture environment. Of course this will not happen as it should because of late stage capitalism but this is what is needed.
Instead the forces of decline will push us towards localism combined with permaculture by necessity. The forces of intermittency and lower net energy of renewables might push us that way if people would embrace the need to maximize renewables with lifestyles that incorporate intermittency. Renewables could be greatly enhanced by localism and dispersed power generation combined with permaculture living with intermittency, seasonality, and simplicity. Farmers and small communities could be selling power and food to the urban areas but also providing their own food and power. Localized small communities could be the place to adapt modern life to intermittency. Too many farmers today shop at Walmart and are dependent with on-demand power. It does not have to be this way but they have to be given the option. Capitalism penalizes such options with high costs.
Demand management is better achieved with small communities dedicated to that way of life. Demand management can be done with smart supper grids but these efforts will always have limits. The human element must be incorporated. Some kinds of conservation and planetary health initiatives are much easier to push in smaller settings with people who agree to adapt their way of life. To get this done there must be support because globalism seeks to delocalize with the higher efficiency of economies of scale and comparative advantage. This cannot be fought by price and economics. Permaculture cannot win against these forces as the world is now. A cascading decline may be too late to institute these forces. These seeds must be planted now.
