Daniel Yergin’s firm predicts petroleum fuel demand peaks in 2036
Add one of the most respected figures in the oil and gas industry to those predicting that demand for petroleum products is nearing its peak.
IHS Markit, of which Pulitzer Prize-winning oil historian Daniel Yergin is vice chairman, released a report Monday predicting that demand for refined products like gasoline and diesel would peak in 2036.
“The energy transition has accelerated during COVID-19, and the combination of changing consumer habits and a heightened sense of urgency around climate change will result in greater political commitment and financial backing for decarbonization of the industry,” Sandeep Sayal, a vice president at IHS Markit, said in a statement.
The forecast follows a stream of similar predictions in recent years, with Royal Dutch Shell CEO Ben van Beurden stating in 2017 that oil demand would peak by 2030.
But while some might see a sharp descent for oil, IHS sees a far more gradual decline.
Analysts there predict that global demand for petroleum products will increase by 9 million barrels a day over the next 15 years, before beginning a decline that keeps demand above 2019 levels until 2050.
That is far below the scenario scientists say is necessary to avoid a 1.5 degree Celsius temperature increase, beyond which the world risks massive crop failures and dangerous sea level rise.
The reasoning, IHS said, is that technologies like electric cars and “green hydrogen” — which is produced from water — are not developing at the pace necessary for a faster shift away from oil. At the same time, the huge investments in renewables needed to transition from fossil fuels are going to struggle with the economic and political realities of life after the pandemic.
“The new IHS Markit base case scenario is ambitious in terms of acknowledging energy transition goals. But it reflects a pragmatic and plausible approach to the implementation and timing of those goals,” Sayal said in a statement.
