OPEC will go ahead with next month’s planned production increase in a further attempt to reduce high world oil prices, the cartel’s President Purnomo Yusgiantoro said. “OPEC still has a commitment to raise its quota by 500,000 barrels a day beginning in August”

It now appears that world oil production, about 80 million barrels a day, will soon peak. In fact, conventional oil production has already peaked and is declining. For every 10 barrels of conventional oil consumed, only four new barrels are discovered. Without the unconventional oil from tar sands, liquefied natural gas and other deposits, world production would have peaked several years ago.

Britain may soon take on permanently to the status of oil importer, with North Sea production, which peaked at 2.9 million barrels a day in 1999, set to fall to near half that level by 2007.

“The winning competitor in this year’s Shell Eco-Marathon achieved an astonishing 9737mpg in the two-day event at the Rockingham Motor Speedway. The French Microjoule team beat their nearest rivals by over 2000mpg, despite problems with a broken chain, disturbing engine noises and difficult weather conditions.”

LONDON (Dow Jones)–Deep water covers 180 billion barrels of the world’s undiscovered oil and natural gas reserves, more than twice the amount yet found, Scottish energy consultants Wood Mackenzie said Wednesday.
Around two-thirds of oil and gas discoveries come from deep water now, as exploration successes on shore and in shallow waters become rarer, Wood Mackenzie said in a statement, citing a study it and fellow energy consultants Fugro Robertson conducted.

NPR’s Madeleine Brand speaks to Tess Vigeland of Marketplace about discouraging news regarding the global oil market.

“There has been no great oil discovery in the past 35 years,” he argues. “The North Sea has peaked. Alaska is in decline. Mexico is in decline. All these great oilfields are in decline. To anybody who thinks I am lying about this, I would ask: where is the oil going to come from?”
Some think the “peak oil production” level has been reached or will arrive soon, driving oil prices up permanently and dramatically.
Australian scientist John Wright says international studies suggest that global oil production has reached its peak or will peak in the next decade and then production will run downhill.

Granted, the United States, with its vast economic and military power, would probably win any direct “hot” war for oil. The far more worrisome scenario is that an escalating rivalry among other big consumers will spark new conflicts

For now, each half-gallon (two-liter) batch of manure converts to only about 9 ounces (0.26 liter) of oil.
But Zhang believes the conversion process could eventually solve the problem of pollution and odor at modern hog farms, where farmers pay big money to get rid of the waste. And, he says, pig oil could also offer an alternative to petroleum oil.
“If 50 percent of U.S. swine farms adopted this technology, we could see a [U.S.] 1.5-billion-dollar reduction in crude oil imports every year,” Zhang said. “And swine producers could see a 10 percent increase in their income
