Basra, , May. 10 (UPI) — A fire suspected to be the work of saboteurs on an Iraqi oil pipeline was brought under control Monday near the southern city of Basra, the BBC said.

A spokesman told BBC News Online the flow of oil through the pipe, which feeds the Basra terminal, was “slowed but not stopped” from 80,000 barrels per hour to 40,000.

An explosion hit the pipeline on the southern tip of the Faw Peninsula Sunday.

The Basra terminal and the smaller Khor al-Amaya terminal, in southern Iraq, jointly export 1.6 million barrels daily.

Sunday’s attack came just two weeks after coalition forces in the area foiled suicide boat attacks on oil tankers at the southern terminals.
