The oil monopoly loves it when oil prices spike. They make huge windfall profits.
The only way to break the monopoly is to diversify.
Don’t like high prices for oil derived transportation fuels. Then make a change.
Walk more, buy a bicycle for short trips, use mass transit more or buy an alternative fuel vehicle.
Bring on the electric, biofuel, flex-fuel, hybrid, CNG and LNG fueled vehicles with increased fuel efficiency.

Define ‘fair’ price. Fossil-fuel powered private cars are destroying the planet. What is ‘fair’ price for the damage that is and will do? And since end-users, ie commuters, only get immediate short-term ‘benefit’. For example, He\She drove their gas-burner 20 miles to one of the 4 big box stores that control the food supply in Britain to buy 10 Euros worth of groceries(with horse-meat at no extra charge). What is a reasonable price to pay for the privelage of doing all that?
