Not much comment needed from me… An ethical masterpiece, from ABC Australia’s Four Corners program, absolutely vital to the public interest, worldwide. Awesome work from our public broadcaster! Watch it here, or watch it at the ABC online:

No news here. The Empire has been stealing from the poor for decades and has ramped up the pillage in recent years. That’s why it is hated in most countries outside the West.

Sadly, I find it hard to like this report. The reporter even calls the oily sludge near the surface, has ‘the smell of money’. Im not sure if this fellow above is some kind of saint or a agent for big oil, or at least, less-big oil. The idea being presented here is not that oil is bad, or its extraction seldom enriches local people in 3rd world locals, in fact, its often times a disaster( See Niger). Other times, majors build walled off, militarized)compounds, and bring in there own people to do the work, often times bypassing the locals all-together(very common practice by western oilcos in Africa).
But the idea being presented is that jobs and wealth will flow from fossil-fuels. If Timor wants to provide jobs in this manner, fine. Nationalize the resource and kick the western oilcos out. Its that simple. It still doesnt address the larger issue, which this report ignores completely, preferring to highlight the obvious fact that western Oilcos are thieves. You dont have to do dig hard for a story like this.
I mean, its a known fact that the O+G industry is NOT very employment intensive, and even less so in 3rd world spots where majors go out of there way NOT to hire locals. The only to get money out of them is thought royalties, or just nationalize. Do that thought, and you tend to find the CIA, USAID, the State Dept and other ‘humanitarian’ groups suddenly take a great interest in promoting ‘democracy’ in your nation…..
