Billions on the line as Trump weighs Iran pullout

Business

From airplanes to oilfields, billions of dollars are on the line for international corporations as President Donald Trump weighs whether to pull America out of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers.

Regardless of where they are headquartered, virtually all multinational corporations do business or banking in the U.S., meaning any return to pre-deal sanctions could torpedo deals made after the 2015 agreement came into force.

That threat alone has been enough to scare risk-averse firms, like Boeing Co., into slow-walking deals agreed to months ago. A complete pullout by the U.S. would wreak further havoc and likely frighten off those considering making the plunge.

“I absolutely think those on the fence will not jump in,” said Richard Nephew, a former sanctions expert at the U.S. State Department who worked on the nuclear deal and now is at New York’s Columbia University. “The only ones who will, will be those who see tremendous monetary benefit and no U.S. risk.”

The 2015 Iran nuclear deal lifted crippling economic sanctions that had locked Iran out of international banking and the global oil trade. In return, Tehran limited its enrichment of uranium, reconfigured a heavy-water reactor so it couldn’t produce plutonium and reduced its uranium stockpile and supply of centrifuges.

For Western businesses, the deal meant access to Iran’s largely untapped market of 80 million people. Most prominently, airplane manufacturers rushed in to replace the country’s dangerously dilapidated civilian fleet.

In December 2016, Airbus Group signed a deal with Iran’s national carrier, IranAir, to sell it 100 airplanes for around $19 billion at list prices. Boeing later struck its own deal with IranAir for 80 aircraft with a list price of some $17 billion, promising that deliveries would begin in 2017 and run until 2025. Boeing separately struck another 30-airplane deal with Iran’s Aseman Airlines for $3 billion at list prices.

Putin obviously wants to make a point: Russia is going to be a major European power, together with Germany and France (PBM), or 640 million, containing the rising China. And once PBM is in place, we will find 120 million or so white Americans who have enough of third world ZOG-USA and would want to join the European world, restored in all its glory. Perhaps we can set up a new home for these white Americans:

Are we entering the age of involuntary degrowth? Promethean technologies and declining returns of innovation (Bonaiuti 2017)

“Advanced capitalist societies have entered a phase of declining marginal returns — or involuntary degrowth — with possible major effects on the system’s capacity to maintain its present institutional framework. Once a certain threshold has been reached, the social organisation as a whole will enter a phase of declining marginal returns, that is to say, a critical phase, which, if ignored, may lead to the collapse of the whole system.”

This threshold appears to have been reached by Europe, Japan and the US before the early 1970s, he argues.

What you have now is not a PBM lite it is an imperfect financial union without the military or political union at the level needed to be united. The Swedish have developed a power delivery technology that completely averts the need for ‘Promethean’ technologies.
    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/apr/12/worlds-first-electrified-road-for-charging-vehicles-opens-in-sweden

This development allows electric cars to be powered directly from the grid – effectively infinite range. The electric battery only needs to have enough range to get the vehicle to the highway, something that is much cheaper than Tesla’s 500km range battery.

The electric power can come from anywhere – one of Cloggie’s wind turbines, a solar plant, gas turbine, nuclear reactor – there is a huge amount of flexibility.

At a cost of 1m Euro per lane km, most countries could electrify their highways at an affordable cost. Sweden has 2000km of highways; electrifying all of them would cost 2bn Euro. Cloggie’s Netherlands has 3,654km of highways; electrification would cost 6.65bn Euro. The UK has 3,519 km, so that’s 3.5bn Euro.
    https://theodora.com/wfbcurrent/sweden/sweden_transportation.html
    https://theodora.com/wfbcurrent/netherlands/netherlands_transportation.html
    https://theodora.com/wfbcurrent/united_states/united_states_transportation.html

Electrification could be carried out in just a few years with concerted effort and most road vehicles switched to battery & grid electric within a decade. Much easier than attempting a complete BEV revolution. What is needed now is political awareness and political will. As things stand the world is vulnerable to oil supply disruptions. But with the right technology deployed, that vulnerability could be greatly reduced within a decade of today. Whether it will or not depends upon decisions that are made right now.

“Behold The Sudden Stop – Risk Of Emerging Markets Collapse Looms”
    https://tinyurl.com/y7l6su43

“It could be the arrival of a “sudden stop”. As I explain in Escape from the Central Bank Trap (BEP, 2017), a sudden stop happens when the extraordinary and excessive flow of cheap US dollars into emerging markets suddenly reverses and funds return to the U.S. looking for safer assets. The central bank “carry trade” of low interest rates and abundant liquidity was used to buy “growth” and “inflation-linked” assets in emerging markets. As the evidence of a global slowdown adds to the rising rates in the U.S. and the Fed’s QT (quantitative tightening), emerging markets lose the tsunami of inflows and face massive outflows, because the bubble period was not used to strengthen those countries’ economies, but to perpetuate their imbalances.”

“The extraordinary demand for bonds and other assets in Argentina or Turkey was justified by expectations of reforms and a change that, as time passed, simply did not happen. Countries failed to control inflation, deliver lower than expected growth and imbalances soared just as the U.S. started to see some inflation, rates started to rise. Suddenly, the yield spread between the U.S. 10-year bond and emerging markets debt was unattractive, and liquidity dried up faster than the speed of light even with a modest decrease of the Federal Reserve balance sheet. Liquidity disappears because of extremely leveraged bets on one single trade – a weaker dollar, higher global growth- unwind.”

Great points Antius but I still think this is a niche not a solution. In those sweet spots where this can occur I think it is an excellent strategy. Any mega population region with renewable potential should be looking closely at these ideas. In the US interstate commercial arteries this would be a great technology for trucking. The batteries would allow them to leave the highways and do their local deliveries.

Any mega population region with renewable potential should be looking closely at these ideas. In the US interstate commercial arteries this would be a great technology for trucking. It suffers from a ‘chicken or the egg’ problem. The electric road network needs to exist and be up and running before many people would consider buying a grid-electric vehicle.

However, every million barrel per day such a system knocked off US oil consumption would reduce import costs by $28bn per year. That’s enough money for 28,000km of new electric highway – about one third of the US total highway system. Such a system could pay for itself quickly I think. Smart money would look for ways that it could be done with private investment.

Whilst peak oil is inevitable and not far off, it need not mean the world going up in smoke. But it does require the right systems being developed at the right time.

Why don’t you read what is posted millimind. I am talking about introducing ground-level electrification for road vehicles. It appears to be near-term and quite affordable and if it works, then renewables (and other electricity sources) would definitely reduce oil demand and we could see large reductions within a decade.

Utter BS. The euro is stable and strong. We have a political union (president, parliament, commission), we have an integrated military, still in NATO, but Macron seems to be serious in setting up a separate European pillar within NATO.

There is good reason for this because the rest of Europe does not want to be dominated by Germany.

Dream on, nobody seriously questions the EU, build around the Paris-Berlin axis, not even nationalist Hungary and Poland. The only dominance that is beginning to irritate Europe-wide is that of Washington and its hated multicult.

Uhuh, but Americans ravaging Europe, in order to add the western half to its empire (as planned since 1933) is without problems, right?

Who is we, anyway? Trump voters (50%) obviously doesn’t like at all the way the US is developing. Yes, it will require a civil war, like in 1776, when more than half of the Americans wanted to get rid of the British. It didn’t succeed then without foreign intervention (French, Dutch) and it won’t succeed this time without foreign intervention. But the magnitude of support the European-Americans will enjoy in the worst case will be stagering: Europe, Russia and China, who are all keen to see the empire go, so they can advance at the geopolitical pecking order at the cost of ZOG, in a similar fashion the US and USSR wanted to destroy 5 centuries of global European hegemony and succeeded.

No one is saying that we don’t have serious long-term problems. But grid electric vehicles solve the immediate liquid fuels problem and postpones the day of reckoning.

Consider this. The EROI of oil in 1940 was about 40. That is one unit of energy invested to get 40 units of oil energy. But IC engines of that era were <20% efficient. So real EROI was about 8 when measured against work energy.

In contrast, a wind-solar-natural gas energy system could have EROI of 15. Grid transmission is 90% efficient and DC electric motors are 80% efficient. So total EROI for a wind-solar-NG grid powered vehicle is 10.8. Actually somewhat better than an IC road vehicle in the 1940s, despite this being the high-point of oil. With a nuclear reactor providing the energy, whole system EROI could be even higher.

The Swedish development powers cars and other vehicles using a live rail embedded in the road. Not very different to a slot car, or Scalectrics if you live in UK. The battery only needs to be big enough to power the vehicle on non-electrified parts of the road network. For most of any long journey, the vehicle draws power directly from the grid. I would argue that this is a game changer…if it works and can be scaled up. A big if admittedly.

Consider this. Electric vehicles in the form of trains, trams and underground systems have been a major part of most countries transport networks for other a century. Few if any of them use batteries. Most of them use something like this:

If we can develop a safe way of powering road vehicles in a similar manner, consider the peak oil crisis to be effectively solved.

Only to America, where there are too many spineless Davy types, shouting “Natzi” and “racism” at every occasion, not to mention sheenies like you, who can’t wait to get whitey destroyed.

    Meanwhile in continental Europe:

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-europe-migrants-ngo/more-ngos-follow-msf-in-suspending-mediterranean-migrant-rescues-idUSKCN1AT0IZ

Even the Libyans have enough of all these hundreds of thousands of Sub-Saharan Africans tress-passing through their country:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/14/three-ngos-halt-mediterranean-migrant-rescues-after-libyan-hostility

In the first half of 2018 only 80,000 made it into Europe, which is peanuts. Future populist governments will throw them out again. Macron is already busy closing the over seas route and setting up asylum officies in Northern Africa, which will reduce the trickle to 1-2%, completely irrelevant.

We are going to survive as a white civilization, where the 7-9 million North-American Jews will attempt to finish off North-American whitey completely.

You are a nazi. Because you want to be apart of white accomplishments that you have nothing to do with. You want to feel like you stand beside Einstein’s, Shakespeare’s. etc…You are in a cult..And since you have nothing to be proud of in life and are most likely but fucking ugly. You latch onto other white people who would want nothing to do with your neckbearded ass.

    You are racist scum.

Simple really….when the World Economy Collapses everything shuts down…the end… We’re talking about grids down all over the world and 7.5B people dropping like f*** flies in short order. The collapse will be absolutely horrible..There is no collapse or horror movie ever produced that has even come close to imagining what the collapse of BAU might look like. I’m talking about every corporation and every social program going bankrupt at once. I’m talking about people eating people. I’m talking about the Worst Catastrophe to ever happen in the history of mankind. Nothing has ever, or will ever come close…
