Peak Oil should be here by 2020 or 2030 and after that, oil demand will continue to rise while oil production declines, and oil prices will skyrocket. Through these higher prices, the free market system will give massive incentives to develop renewable energy sources including wind energy and solar power. Nothing will ever replace the convenience and energy density of oil, but other sources will eventually constitute the majority of the world energy supply.

Denial that we passed the peak in NET oil production years ago makes this another dream scenario. Cooking oils and moonshine are not oil. Neither is asphalt from Canada or ‘stuff’ from fraking. The NET energy has been dropping for years. The NET oil per capita has been dropping for decades. We passed ‘peak oil’ long ago.

Net energy availability per capita is indeed what’s going to count, increasingly, as population grows and resources shrink. While I have no major quarrel with the development of renewables to the extent still (barely) possible, believing they will some day ‘replace’ the energy density of fossil fuels is a Jimminy Cricket “If You Wish Upon a Star” scenario. Alternatively, you could try clicking your heels together to get back to Kansas …
