Oil Heading for Trouble?

“We’re heading for real trouble, I think, on oil, and nobody can be pleased about that, even if you happen to be in the alternative energy business,” Dr Jeremy Leggett, founder and chairman of Solarcentury & UK Industry Taskforce on Peak Oil and Energy Security, said to CNBC.

Germany has a good mass transit system. The U.S. has none. Comparing Apples to Oranges.

The US has some, not none. Not nearly enough, obviously.

Leggett did a great job on that.

It’s too bad Leggett isn’t more widely recognized. He’s even-tempered, smart, and articulate.

He doesn’t have the fly-to-shit quality of Kunstler and other big mouths.

Here’s the rub. Human “civilization” has been around for thousands of years, subsisting off of the land using whatever “solar” energy came trickling down into the plants, through wind and streams. Industrial “civilization” has been around for only a couple of hundred years. In that mere 200 years we have burned through most of the “fossil” resources to build up a huge, resource-intensive, mega industrial complex that people just a few centuries before could not have imagined.

This edifice was built on the premise of ever-greater inputs of energy and raw materials from a finite earth to keep an expanding economy growing on this same finite earth. When the fossil fuels, water and materials are used up then our great, unbeatable, supreme technology is “expected” to dish out an “app” to create more energy, materials, water and land mass for growing populations out of thin air. As they say, there’s an “app” for that. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Thought so…

What remains to be seen is how this zombie populace will react when the lights go out and the pumps run dry. That’s to ben seen in the next chapter of OUR Long Emergency…
