NY to Amsterdam flight fueled by cooking oil

NY to Amsterdam flight fueled by cooking oil thumbnail

A Dutch airliner is flying from New York to Amsterdam on a fuel mix that includes leftover oil from frying Louisiana’s Cajun food.

The KLM flights from Kennedy Airport are powered by a combination of 25% recycled cooking oil and 75% jet fuel.

After the first such flight Friday, the concept will be tested on 24 round-trip trans-Atlantic trips every Thursday for the next six months.

KLM executive Camiel Eurlings jokingly told the New York Post that “it smelled like fries” while the plane was being fueled.

The waste oil from frying up crawfish, cracklins and other Cajun specialties is refined at a Louisiana plant, then trucked to JFK.

KLM says the cooking oil reduces polluting carbon emissions up to 80%.

This means nothing. It’s a media relations exercise. It’s like buses that say ‘This bus runs on biofuel”. Yeah, 2% biofuel. For the bus company, they save big money, on the shear number of buses they have on the road, but it does nothing for climate change or EROEI. As things get worst, the one thing the rich will feel the pinch on is flight travel. Of course the rest of us will feel the pinch of food prices.

Keep eating deep fried fast food people, it is the future of aviation that is at stake if you don’t.

Yeah its funny to act like its a solution to energy shortages. Its just a tiny amount of leftover waste oil. Its clearly a PR stunt, they hope it will sell more plane tickets, maybe yes, but it wont put more oil into the ground. I have been behind a couple of ‘this car runs on recycled bio fuel’ and it had an intense smell of burnt potatoes. Its hilarious to think of a whole 747 producing that smell, well at least we all got something to smile about. :o)

Gee I wonder how much fuel was used (wasted) trucking that stuff up from LA.? If the notion of running a gas-powered private trash bin SUV or w/e on cooking oil is ridiculous, its simply idiotic to try it in a 747, one of the most fuel-intensive ways to move people around in existence.

Kind of reminds me of Branson and his idiotic idea of turning large portions of the equatorial regions into coconut plantations so he can keep *his* fuel sucking jets in the air. Same insanity @ work eh?

Now they can save up enough for another flight next month.

What a sad time we live in : shale and tight oil “revolution” propaganda on one side, green washing on the other.

And how much gasoline was burned driving around collecting all this awesome cooking oil? Anyone can use cooking oil in a diesel vehicle, they just have to drive around all day to collect it. So stupid, just like corn ethanal.

    Such a stupid publicity stunt.

Isn’t this the same country that is paying to cut down the indonesian rainforest to make palm oil plantations so they can avoid carbon taxes on power generation. Of course the palm oil plantations are a carbon bomb in themselves, might break even in 400 years.
