Fusion Scientists Report Breakthroughs

Fusion Scientists Report Breakthroughs thumbnail

Scientists this week are reporting a series of successes in nuclear-fusion technology, a theoretically limitless source of energy, with widespread positive implications for global economies and the environment. At universities, this appears to accompany an increase in student interest—although not an increase in research money.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has just finished assembling a laser array that could start a fusion reaction. Princeton University

    “could start a fusion reaction.”

And there is the rub. How long has this been promised? Don’t hold your breath.

Indeed. And when you triggered it, there’s the question of controlling it…

Ah, spoken like someone who has no fracking clue what they’re talking about.

There’s a less than pea sized capsule of fuel. The lasers implode it. It spends a fraction of a second fusing then the capsule expands under the force of its own energy release and the density falls below that needed for fusion.

Controlling it is trivial. You just turn off the laser.

    “Don’t hold your breath.”

I have little doubt they’ll reach break-even. You just need a lot more than break-even to create a power plant.

I’m not that interested in limitless energy solutions anymore. I’m more interested in cheap energy solutions! 😉

finally a peak oil website that isn’t posing as a doomsday forum!
