Dr Michael Shaver, Chancellor’s Fellow in the School of Chemistry, presents “The Intertwined World of ‘Peak’ Oil, Renewables and Sustainability”.
In this lecture he looks at both petroleum resources and renewable feedstocks as sources of our chemical needs, and the relationship between energy and sustainability.
This lecture is part of the University’s “Our Changing World” public lecture series, which examines the global challenges facing society, and the role of academia in meeting these challenges: http://www.ed.ac.uk/events/changing-w…
This lecture was recorded on 24 September 2013 at the University of Edinburgh’s Appleton Tower.

I’ll try and have a look at this later but I’ll admit to being already skeptical about “academia” meeting any global challenges …

Dr. Shaver is, I think, going to get a shock when he finds out that peak oil is not ‘a long way off’, as he puts it.
Another example of “human ingenuity will get us out of this” – head-in-the-sand optimism.

Dr. Shaver is a chemist. As a chemist he promotes the use of chemicals. In his own words, 94% of all chemicals come from fossil fuels.
Judging from how old he looks, I highly suspect that Dr. Shaver’s career in chemistry, will end long before he reaches the age of retirement.

Techies cannot see beyond their narrow field, somewhat like ‘economists’. I didn’t even waste the whole hour plus as after 20 or so minutes, I saw his colors flying high. More … ‘techies to the rescue’ BS even as the world falls apart and is killed by their own techie products. He is another high paid shill for BAU.

later on he did acknowledge what peak oil really is and the importance of EROEI. I was thinking the same thing the lady did when she brought up net energy…
