Republican Party and Libertarians are unabashedly corporatists and haters of government. Democratic Party is a subsidiary of corporations, being social fascists they seek to use government for profit and control. Being a little bit more sophisticated, they understand the utility of bread and circuses. FDR saved the capitalists and they have hated him for it ever since.
On this site, the name calling is entertaining, kind of like big time wrestling. However, we all know that the future is bleak due to resource depletion and environmental degradation and population pressure.
Why are so many resigned to hopelessness? Humanities grasp of science and history is formidable, we can still make a difference but it requires one charismatic leader with a worthwhile analysis. (NOT hillary or donald) It has happened several times in history. Inevitably there is backsliding and a need for revitalization. That is the point at which we find ourselves today.

Techkno, The problem is not history or science, it is human nature. It is decades too late to fix this shit. There is nothing anyone can do to stop catastrophic Climate Change and the total destruction of human civilization. The inertia behind this thing is the largest force humanity has ever seen. Even if 99% of humanity died today, the feedbacks we have activated would continue feeding each other and make most or all of this planet uninhabitable to humans for millennia.

I second what Juan says. We are in a systematic collapse process firmly entrenched and at all levels. The only salvation humans can find is from within. Meaning is found in embracing this collapse process because that is reality. Reality has always been our source of salvation because that is where meaning and truth dwell.

Peakoil is a political correct topic that is used to unload despair upon, where in reality the real source of despair is not so much concern with running out of oil or run away climate change, but because there is a general foreboding of immanent social collapse, due to financial instability, war and/or ethnic conflict.
