As demand for clean energy continues to grow, the solar industry forecasts millions of photovoltaic systems will dot the landscape by the end of the decade. However, a severe shortage of the silicon used in the systems threatens to dampen solar’s growth. According to a recent solar-energy report from the nonprofit Energy Foundation, the U.S. […]

As China becomes a large oil importer, experts say building the country’s own oil tanker fleet to ensure oil security in the future is an urgent task. The fleet should be capable of handling at least 50 percent of China’s total oil imports, Friday’s Beijing-based Economic Information Daily quoted shipping industry experts as saying Based […]
Iran’s recent indication of setting up a petroeuro oil bourse can’t be overlooked. The change that Iran hints at might shift oil trade trend from petrodollar to petroeuro. Thus making euro an equal partner of dollar in the central banks of various countries across the world. If this is the case then American dollar hegemony […]
Oil prices made further gains back toward $55 a barrel on Friday as traders said sustained demand and refinery outages could strain U.S. gasoline supplies ahead of peak summer motoring demand. U.S. light crude (CLc1) rose 50 cents to $54.30 a barrel, making a four-day rally that has added over $4 to prices. Oil is […]

The sweeping energy legislation passed by the U.S. House on Thursday would accelerate oil-shale development in northwest Colorado. Page 904 of the thousand-page bill contains a provision that orders the Interior Department to start leasing its oil-shale reserves by the middle of 2007. The federal government owns 80 percent of the lands containing oil-shale reserves
Oil prices on Thursday gave up some of the gains made earlier in the week as the market considered the speed of global economic growth and its likely impact on demand. Bloated budget deficits pose a danger to the nation
With crude prices persistently high and global demand growing, oil importing states urged exporting countries today to increase their production capacities and lift barriers to foreign investment. “Certain producer countries remain closed to international investors or offer them very unattractive conditions,” France’s energy minister Patrick Devedjian said as he opened an international conference of oil […]
“I voted no because the energy bill falls far short of President Bush’s strategy to respond to the reality of threats to America’s economic and national security from our dependence upon cheap imported oil. Oil isn’t forever. It’s a finite resource. We are relying upon countries that don’t like us to sell us their oil. We’re competing against other countries to buy oil, such as China now the world’s #2 importer behind America. Increasing world demand and global peak oil, or stagnating production, means that oil prices will rise. The end of cheap oil is coming and coming fast. It is a tsunami we can predict that will have devastating consequences worldwide. The President recommends steps to meet this growing threat. I am hopeful the Senate bill and Conference will produce a final bill to implement the President’s vision that I can support.”
If the Devil himself wanted to design a perfect trap for attracting morons, he couldn’t have done better than this season’s New York International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Center. NOTE:Eat This, Kunstler Haters.
World oil production is set to peak in the next two years, at which point there will not be enough new projects coming on stream to offset global oilfield declines, according to a new study. The report, by the London-based Oil Depletion Analysis Centre (ODAC), shows there are 73 major oil projects under development around […]
For a transport vehicle to be all it can be, the Army says it needs to run far on a tank of gas and provide portable power. To meet this goal, the military is developing a hybrid Humvee alternative that could boost the market for combination combustion-electric vehicles. Global oil reserves are in little danger of running out for many decades, and OPEC will continue to boost production as necessary to stabilize prices, a senior official of the group said Wednesday. “The problem in 2004 was we did not anticipate the strength of demand … it appears that in 2005 we are reaching […]
President George W. Bush made it clear Wednesday that U.S. drivers can expect no short-term political solutions that will deliver quick relief from sky-high gasoline prices. In a much-anticipated speech on energy policy that was pitched as the White House’s answer to runaway oil prices, Bush said he had no “magic wand” to prick the […]
This is the tragedy of our time: The very definition of what it is to be human is that we were unique among all the other animals on the African plain in that we had foresight. Our survival strategy was foresight, and it got us to where we are today. So now we have all […]
For as long as we can remember, experts have been talking about a looming energy crisis. Certainly, almost everyone recognizes that fossil fuels are a finite resource and that at some time society is going to have to transition to another source of energy. That concern, in part, was included as justification for President Eisenhower’s […]
Entering the sixth year of a record dry spell in much of the western United States is bad enough. But what really worries the head of the federal agency that delivers water to more than 30 million people and 10 million acres of farmland is what happens when the region’s precipitation returns to normal. “The […]
Saudi Arabia’s Oil Minister Ali Naimi pledged Thursday that the Kingdom would lift its oil exports to meet near-term demand, adding the flood of investment in oil futures from banks and pension and hedge funds had sharply curbed OPEC’s ability to cool prices.
