How to jump into a raging torrent? The trouble is that I have scouted up and down the river bank and I see too many good places from which to leap into this new blog. The old saying that every great journey begins with the first step is highly misleading, in part because the first step is often the largest, and may irrevocably determine the direction, or indeed may preclude ever getting to the desired destination at all. At least the leap into this blog is not like that.

Greater efficiency, not a new wonder fuel, is the answer to higher oil prices
Higher priced energy will slow global economic growth and that damages living standards everywhere, including the UK. No, I think the big issue is the extent to which high-priced fossil fuels stimulate the quest both for greater efficiency in energy use and the development of alternative sources. And the great unknown is whether there is a radical alternative out there, already in some laboratory, that will change everything. It has to be out there now, for it typically takes 30 years for a development to get from the initial invention to widespread global application.

The important point is this: Why is OPEC busy asking Russia and other non-cartel producers to boost their production if Saudi Arabia has everything under control? Iraqi Security Chief for Oil Fields Assassinated
“The security chief for the oil fields in northern Iraq has been assassinated, in the latest attack on the industry.
Police said Ghazi al-Talabani was shot by gunmen as he travelled to work in the city of Kirkuk.
Mr Talabani is a cousin of Jalal Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
The killing was the third assassination of an official in less than a week, amid escalating violence in the run-up to the 30 June handover of power. ”
There’s enough oil left to last for 40 years, says BP
“There is no global resource or reserve shortage,” said Peter Davies, chief economist at BP.
He was speaking as the company published its annual review of world energy trends.
The report said that the amount of proved oil left in the world was 1.15trillion barrels, 10pc more than it estimated last year. It would take 41 years for this to be depleted, the report added.
