New measures to save winter power

SOUTH AFRICA – Replacing 100 000 electric stoves with gas burners, subsidising certain electrical appliances and distributing five million energy efficient light bulbs are some of the ways the Western Cape plans to save electricity this winter.

A range of energy saving measures has been identified by the Western Cape Integrated Development plan.

These measures are aimed at the efficient use of electricity in the province.

Some of the interventions include:

# Replacing 100 000 two-plate stoves, and 30 000 electric hobs and ovens, with liquified petroleum gas (LPG) bottles and stoves on June 1. This will be done through a subsidy and trade-in scheme, including a free gas supply for the winter.

# Offering subsidies on certain appliances – solar water heating, geyser blankets, ceiling insulation and installation – sold by major retailers and suppliers.

# Replacing five million household bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights.
