Wall - E - a doomer must see.

Unread postby Schmuto » Tue 28 Apr 2009, 15:40:53

Cartoon . . .

Just saw it. Awesome cartoon movie.

A metaphor for our lives.

And yes, Mos, your dislike of the movie and dismissal of its message has already been duly noted (why do I suspect that you look like most of the people in the movie?).

SPOILERS BELOW HERE - seriously, if you might watch the movie, stop reading here.

The movie is an allegory for where we are at:

Controlled by a hidden power in plain site.
Fat, lazy, completely dependent on the artificial system we have created.
Rampant consumerism.
Conformation to norms.
A return to the basics of living - self-sufficiency.
The stifling of information by the PTB in order to keep the status quo going.
The labeling of those threatening the status quo as terrorist defectives.

My criticisms:

Spend 15 minutes less on Earth in the beginning.
Spend 45 minutes more in the space ship battling against the powers that be to show the truth and get back to earth.
Develop a few characters on the ship who fight to break out of their restraints - there was a huge opportunity here.
Have the controlling power be more obvious - the Usurious bank - show why it wants to maintain the status quo - no reason is given.
Have the controlling interest be more than the auto pilot.

Do those things, and the movie goes from well-done, good message movie to . . .
. . . doomer cult classic.

Not sure if we saw the same movie.

Nobody made them do it, true.
But somebody set up a system that made it the easy choice for them to do it.
And somebody actively tried to stop a return to the earth.
And somebody labeled those trying to get everybody to return to the earth as "dangerous" types who must be stopped, while concealing the truth of the reason why they were wanted.

In the movie, the somebody was "Auto," the evil steering wheel thing. He was TPTB.

Why did he want for the status quo to continue? Who knows?

But he did, and he fought tooth and nail to keep the truth from getting out and to keep the sheeple from hearing the truth.

Like I said - all that was easy for me to pick up on the first run through, so maybe you saw a different movie.

Great flick... pure Disney doom.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Auto was the auto-pilot computer-ship's wheel.

I own that one on DVD. I'm surprised Disney put something out that grim, but then again, they did kill Bambi's mother off, and how about Dumbo?

We went and saw it as a family. The movie was well done and it made an impression on my kids. At least I think it did.

They kept talking about the huge piles of trash and how awful that was. And they liked the way the people came back and started planting gardens.

I smiled inside when I overheard their conversation on the ride home.

Definitely an odd level of gloom from Pixar, but . . .

. . . this concept was poised to take it to the next level.

Next level would have been to really develop the PTB running the ship with a settled and distinct interest on not allowing the sheeple to go back "to the earth."

They were right there.

The scene where the captain views the old captain pics on the wall, and the progression shows the captains getting fatter and Auto getting brighter, is the crux of it.

It's a timeline of America - the PTB get slowly stronger as we get slowly fatter and incapable.

Even kids movies have to start reflecting the world around them. Check out Happy Feet, for instance.

Next you'll have another Tim Allen Santa Clause movie where he has to take on Global Warming to save his North Pole home from sinking into the ocean.

Easy enough for Santa to do... just dump enough free presents to overpower all the goods the markets sell, and crash the world economy! Muahahah!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'T')hird time last week. Still fantastic for it's sheer visual beauty and poetry. The scene where Wall-e and Eva dance together in space is glorious. Wall-e dips his hand in Saturn's asteroid belt like a surfer. :)

Schmuto, there wasn't a conspiracy so much as a screw up. Shelby Forthright the CEO of the Buy'n'Large corporation has told Auto 700 years prior that $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shelby from IMDB', 'F')rom WALL·E (2008)
Shelby Forthright, BnL CEO: [Shelby appears onscreen in an old classified recorded message] Hey there, autopilots. Got some bad news. Um... Operation Cleanup has, well uh, failed. Wouldn't you know, rising toxicity levels have made life unsustainable on Earth.
Captain: [to himself, looking at healthy plant] Unsustainable? What?
Shelby Forthright, BnL CEO: Darn it all, we're gonna have to cancel Operation Recolonize. So uh, just stay the course, um... Rather than try and fix this problem, it'll just be easier for everyone to remain in space.
Captain: "Easier"?
Shelby's advisor: Mr. President, sir. Sir! Time to go.
[...]
so auto is doing as he was told.

I think your interpretation is awful.

The scene where they show the captains on the wall getting progressively weaker and fatter over time tells it all.

Auto is in each picture, and in each successive picture, he gets brighter.

You'll also note that he is the spitting image of Hal.

You'll remember that Hal was the computer who had a conflict of interest in 2001 and took control to execute orders contrary to what the humans wanted/needed.

Further, Auto actively tries to eject the plant. Why would he do that? He can run the whole ship but he's too stupid to understand what the plant symbolizes?

Anyway, that's a great part of art - we can each have our own interpretation.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I') didn't notice Auto in the old photographs.

So are TPTB Shelby Forthright at Buy'n'Large or Auto? Who is running the conspiracy?

I wonder of Walt Disney (the pre-corporate, fully animated, blood and guts version) was a revolutionary? This movie is pretty subversive. That's why I like it.:)

Agree completely. Shockingly morose for Pixar.

Just saw it with my niece. We enjoyed it. We laughed at the rolly-polly citizens sliding helplessly around on the ship when it went topsy turvy. Although some banded together to save the sliding babies. I think Auto was TPTB but that the point was that it was installed, instructed by us and maintained by its ability to provide for us. Looking at the state of the work and its people, you can't help but think that there is no way these jello-y blobs could ever return to an earth that would have higher gravity and require manual labor. I think Kunstler must have been a consultant for this movie. Try blue, it's the new red.
