Diesel or LNG

Unread postby Petro » Wed 22 Jun 2005, 21:54:59

Hey all. I've not posted in this forum before, but have a question and would appreciate any opinions. I'm building a new home, (or buying a new home), and will be installing a generator backup system. Living in Florida is reason enough, but because of PO, etc., I'm in a quandry. My options that are affordable are a diesel powered or a gas(LNG), unit. Which is the smartest. My thinking is that with diesel I can at least make BioDiesel for a time when SHTF. LNG though cheap might become problematic to secure in the future.
Any thoughts?

I would buy a few solar panels and a cheap inverter if I were you and run my necessities off that i.e. refrigeration.

Diesel will be in short supply, as for biodiesel where are you going to get your feedstock to make biodisel from? You going to grow corn in your back yard? Where will the methanol come from?

Natural Gas is in decline in North America so doubt that will be much use to you either as it will be very expensive IMO. You could store propane if thats what you mean, but what do you do when that runs out?

Well I don't know much but where are you going to get your LNG from right now? Do you mean propane? or do you mean natural gas. I wasn't aware that LNG was sold comercially. In any event I would go with Diesel, it will be much more readily available.

If you can't be talked into solar or wind for back up I'd go diesel over propane. locating fuel for either could get difficult and expensive though. Diesel is likely to run out before propane is my guess and then after a period of hurt it may partially be replaced by biodiesel. propane should be available longer but when it's gone I know of no easy replacement.

Well, you could move to Europe. The EU and OPEC are talking about LNG transfer from Iran to Europe!

That isn't rain you're feeling, BTW. It's the US sweating up a storm over THAT news!

thanks for replies. I more or less have chosen diesel but wanted some opinions. I have no fantasies that I can/could go on forever with either, but just hoping to get over some bumps. I have also considered the solar option, but alas, batteries are not IMO easier to deal with than making biodiesel. Living in Florida, I suspect high winds could also make them problematic. But I'm still looking into them. Thanks all.
