Getting serious about energy

Unread postby baldwincng » Wed 11 May 2005, 12:16:37

With the UK General election out the way, a debate is starting in the UK about energy, electricity generation, global warming, security of supply etc

Interesting article in The Times today:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')nstead of getting to grips with the country’s future energy needs and being serious about reducing carbon gas emissions, which would mean drawing up plans for a new generation of nuclear power stations, ministers persist in boasting the merits of “renewable” energy – promoting inefficient and loss making technologies – talking drivel concerning micro-turbines, small-scale biomass generators and solar-powered mobile telephones, and preaching about “energy efficiency”. A speech by the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir David King, yesterday marked the latest articulation of this nonsense.

If Iran does restart its nuclear programme (with the expected adverse consequences to oil suppllycaused by the coming together of bunker busting bombs and bunkers), we'll be in better shape than ever before for taking all this seriously.

Now that T Blair is resigning how likely is it that the Parliment will be unable to finnish the term without a vote of no confidence and a forced election? The longer the current PTB hold off an election the more likely that a recession will be in full force when the term is up and they will be booted out of office IMO.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
