MIT's Energy "Manhattan Project"

Unread postby FireJack » Fri 11 Aug 2006, 12:56:13

Wired Magazine

From reading the article its certainly no manhattan level project, rather it seems wired put a bunch of various energy related projects together and called it an energy manhattean project to get attention.

Whats disapointing is that none of these projects show any real promise, most of them simply being possible applications of nanotechnology.

50% include nanotechnology

if only 1/3 of these projects have success, we will have new options

and why should MIT do research on old technologies?

Let me ask you a question:

Do you have any knowledge of what the Manhattan Project was?

Taking something barely a lab-table experiment and trying to scale it up to full industrial production within a decade? Sounds like a perfect analogy to me.

All the technologies in the article are almost ready to be marketed on a grand scale (except for the 'spinach' PV cells).

The main problem will be one of scaling them up and implementing them rapidly enough. But there's hope. Around 75% of the world's population lives in countries where there is no traditional fossil fuel infrastructure. So they can "leapfrog" towards these efficient technologies rightaway, without the burden of the old infrastructure.
The Beginning is Near!

Oh come on Lorenzo, give me a break. Show me hard proof that these are "almost ready to be marketed on a grand scale".

That's just silly.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;
All the King's horses and all the King's men,
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

Hell yes! Most of the people I've met are great.

The morons are a minority. Unfortunately, those people have a tendency to seek power ...
I am a sarcastic cynic. Some say I'm an asshole. Now that we have that out of the way ...
