Parasitic power generation from human activity & metabol

Unread postby Jenab6 » Sun 02 Jul 2006, 21:10:27

I was looking for the mechanical efficiency of the human body on a Google search and found this.

There are some Smart People looking for ways to turn people into walking electricity generators.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')bstract: As the power requirements for microelectronics continue decreasing, environmental energy sources can begin to replace batteries in certain wearable subsystems. In this spirit, this paper examines three different devices that can be built into a shoe, (where excess energy is readily harvested) and used for generating electrical power "parasitically" while walking. Two of these are piezoelectric in nature: a unimorph strip made from piezoceramic composite material and a stave made from a... (Update)

A simple pedal-powered generator, feeding the back end of an uninterruptable power supply (UPS), will enable anyone to keep their laptop and DSL modem running indefinitely. And, best of all, burn calories that would otherwise turn into fat whilst sitting at the desk.

Human poop is also a viable source of power in the form of methane gas, which can be recovered either from on-site treatment (composting toilets) or from centralized sewage treatment plants. (Now I wonder about this: If you wore a Fart Funnel (TM) whilst sitting at desk, would the collected methane from flatulence be sufficient to power the laptop & DSL modem....?:-)

They should turn all exercise equipment in all the gyms into micro generators to run the lights and cold drinks fridges. They might even generate enough to sell back to the grid and supplement their income.
Kind regards, Katkinkate
