The Straight Dope by Cecil Adams

Unread postby TWilliam » Wed 22 Feb 2006, 22:47:31

From the Salt Lake City Weekly:

Won't Get Fueled Again

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')i]But Cecil, you object, how is this thought supposed to be comforting? Today we don’t have any comparable alternative fuel waiting in the wings. I can only reply: Sure we do. What’s more, it was waiting in Hubbert’s day. The title of his 1956 paper was “Nuclear Energy and the Fossil Fuels.” His purpose in writing had been to point out that, in contrast to oil, the U.S. had sufficient reserves of fissionable fuels, chiefly uranium, to last hundreds and likely thousands of years.

Mmm hmm...

"So umm... Cecil. How is that new 'fertilizer-and-pesticides-from-U-235' project coming along, anyway?"

One can't help but wonder if folks such as Mr. Adams even comprehend that there is a lot more at stake here than simply keeping warm and being able to drive 20 miles to Walmart and back for a buck or two...

Dissapointing coming from cecil but I don't see him printing off a doom and gloom article. His faith in a massive ramping up of nuclear power is rather surprising, I wonder how hard he really thought about it. How we are going to build and maintain hundreds of nuclear power plants with alternatives. I don't know what else to saw the people in this forum have been over this stuff a hundred times before.

I agree FireJack. It just really irks me when people put out this "yes we have a problem but all we have to do is [insert pet 'solution' here], and then everything'll be just fine" crap, without any mention of the enormity of the task involved, or any exploration of the issue of whether it's even feasible.

More "don't-worry-be-happy" BS is all it is, imo...

As all Straight Dopers know, Cecil Adams is the center of knowledge
on the internet. But he's not the Pope, he's not infallible.

I once had the honor of posting on his discussion board immediately
prior to one of his very rare posts. He completely ignored my post,
but why should he be different than anyone else in this regard? :-D

How's this for a wierd coincidence. Saturday night I emailed a suggestion to the editor of the Salt Lake City Weekly suggesting that they do a cover story similar to the cover story of the Sacramento News and Review of January 26, 2006 titled "Sacramento on Empty". (a peak oil story)

With publishing lead times and all, I'm sure this article was already destined to appear in the paper , and it's just a syndicated column anyway.

If anyone wants to contact him & comment on his article, you can click on his name (in the upper right corner) and send him an email. He's updated some of his columns in the past (at least on StraightDope.com) when he's received new information.

Edit - There's also this at the bottom of the article:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')omments, questions? Take it up with Cecil on the Straight Dope Message Board, StraightDope.com, or write him at the Chicago Reader, 11 E. Illinois, Chicago 60611.
