Off-topic: Should Devil apply his own moratorium?

Unread postby Devil » Thu 02 Feb 2006, 07:34:15

In a recent post, faced by the idiocies of black and white views, equally far-fetched,, I suggested that I leave this board for 6 months, mainly because of the repeated arguments in thread after thread after thread and the consequent waste of time.

I have always tried to give a balanced and pragmatic view in the debates I have contributed to, based on my several decades of experience and a reasonable knowledge of the environment, science and engineering. It really pains me when I see that some posters really believe in the unscientific and/or emotional and/or impractical ideas and trolls that they promote. I admit that, as it is not in my nature to suffer fools gladly, I'm aware that some of my answers may be caustic and I make no apologies for my nature. I call a spade a spade. I admit also that I'm just as fallible as anyone else.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I feel the time I spend reading the posts here may possibly be better employed in something more productive. I therefore ask the regular contributors to this board for a vote of confidence or the opposite, so that I may better judge whether to leave or not. Note that this is not a democratic election: I'll take the results into consideration but a majority, one way or another, will not necessarily reflect my final decision.

NOOOOO!!

Don't leave! Please!

Who is going to answer my stupid energy questions now? I don't really trust anybody else in this forum to be knowledgeable enough.

I just recently got some money from my family and I'm wondering what's the best energy-saving measures I could take. I was about to ask a few questions about that.

1) To lose less heat in the windows, I'm thinking of putting a blind covered on the inside with this radiation-reflecting material I got in a camping shop. My plan is using the blind at night. Is this a good idea?

2) What other heat-saving measures is worth doing?

3) I have an electrical cooker. Is there anything I can do to save electricity on it?

You may consider turning it off 10-15 minutes before the time the recipe says is necessary to prepare the food. Plenty of residual heat to finish the job without giving you (or anyone else) a diarrhea.

Obviously it's up to you if you leave. But I'd be sorry if you go.

But this all seems unnecessarily histrionic.

Why don't you put a limit on the amount of time you spend here? Or ignore the trolls?

go and do some thing more useful

the basic message is out there now... it was always going to be embellished with non sensical emotional and political twists

the real problem is getting people o shed there own bias to a practical degree

pop back in once a fortnight or something.. you'll go potty staying here all the time

The third option reminds me of the additive identity for fields, except with two unique elements...
Anyhoo, I think you should stay, especially in light of your recent comments.

P.s. Out of all the contributions you've made to this board, this impresses me the most. Unlike most right/left/cookie-cutter wing members, you have the common sense to wonder how effective your actions (as they pertain to your goals) are.

Absolutely not. The idea of Devil or any other of the higher quality forumers leaving here because of a few intellectually-stunted idealogues is UTTER CODSWALLOP! If Devil leaves the noise to signal ratio goes up a notch or three.

Banish the verbose, zealot, scientific know-it-alls. It's their inability to simplify - both in their mental uptake and in their expression - that's causing the problem. Unable to effectively advocate solutions, they instead wind up propagating reams of mind-numbing, half-truthed bullshit.

Their blind advocacy of a big nuclear rollout in the midst of global unrest, an ongoing corrupt growth-based business paradigm and creeping fascism on the home front is a perfect illustration of this. They're simply dumb technocratic cog-boys muddying the discussion.

Starvid and Tanada being smart, concise and factual pro-nuclear advocates are welcome exceptions. You too, Devil, although, again, I believe you have misidentified the problem's true origin.

I probably would have left long ago if not for the magic of the IGNORE button. The forum has a couple dozen participants who have never had anything intelligent to say and never will. Just use the ignore button, it works great.

You should stay Devil. Without you we'd have all given up Peak Oil to chase after Lorenzo's Mystery Crop X. :-D

Seriously. In the words of Stuart Smalley: You're good enough. You're smart enough. And dog gone it, people like you!

Devil,

Take some time off from this place. I thought when I left that I was leaving permanently, but after a few months, I came back, I spend little time here anymore, as there are much more important things to do, as in actually doing something about this senario we are in, enjoying life, helping those who are close to you. You may think that you are helping guide us through this craziness, and you are, but with the amount of noise out there, and in here, it is difficult. And when I come by, I look for your posts, as they are quality, from someone who has put in decades in the fields that directly affect the subject matter. Now I may not agree with all that you say... but that is another story...

Take some time off, you say for six months, but it may only be for a few weeks. Let your soul be your guide.

OK, I've made my decision.

Despite the 2/3 majority, I've decided not to continue here on a regular basis. I may come back intermittently and at irregular intervals, but I have un-bookmarked these forums.

If any of you wish to debate anything with me, you are always welcome to do so in the Energy and Environment Forums, which I run, at http://www.cypenv.org/smf/index.php
and which are always open for serious subjects, based on science. Be warned, however, there is not a specific Peak Oil board and I do not welcome debates on far-fetched theories or ideas. Pragmatism and Practicality are the keynotes.

Also, I'm less acerbic there :)
