Movie: "Water World"

Unread postby Tyler_JC » Sat 21 May 2005, 15:59:52

In the movie, Water World, the entire Earth has flooded and everyone lives on boats. A small girl has the map to “Dry Land” tattooed on her back and some big important evil person has captured her. Here is a rough conversation between the two of them.

Man: Could ya tell me what that map means?
Girl: It’s the way to “Dry Land”
Man: Could you tell me how to get there?
Girl: NO
Man: You have to tell me. You see, I have a large “family” here and we need space (referring to his cadre)
Girl: Why don’t you make less people? On my atoll (floating village), we only have babies when there’s room for them. That way there’s enough food and water for everyone.
Man: Well that won’t work here. See, we’re the Church of Eternal Growth. We need more land for more people. So you need to tell me how to get to “Dry Land”.

These aren't exact quotes, but they're pretty close. This movie was made a long time ago and it still has some interesting ideas. The Growthists are evil when there isn't enough room. They will destroy everything in order to continue their quest. The Sustainablity people are wiped out by the former group. Any thoughts? (if you haven't seen the movie yet, rent it...it's decent)

It's an okay movie. I dont really remember the growth stuff though but hey it's been a while and i didn't now SH** back then..... (being 15 or 16 year old --> no offence Tyler :P)

Anyway its true that probably those who grow and have more manpower will overrun the sustainable people (because they are with less) and destroy them. But in the end they will destroy themselves.

So are you first in line to give your land back to the American Indians and getting your family ready for the move back to Europe? It’s about the same logic.

Bigg what kind of crappy reply is that?

Yes it is about the same parralel but what has the American of today to do with THAT (in the sense of a personal attack?)

I really do find some of your posts refreshing on technology but these personal attacks are annoying me. Back down a bit please

Its not a personal attack in any way, shape, or form. My point is the “Growthists” are only evil depending on your point of view and the “Growthists” at this point are the ones creating sustainable for all of US.

Oops, I didn't mean to imply that the "Growthists" were/are evil. I was just saying that the movie suggested that growth was the cause of all of man's problems.

I just watched Dr. Zhivago and was struck by the fact that it was illegal for the Dr. to tear off pieces of a fence to use as fuel for the wood burning stove, when resources were scarce following revolution
