Book: "The Christmas Sweater" by Glenn Beck

Unread postby anador » Thu 24 Dec 2009, 14:42:00

So, I was doing some last-minute shopping in Borders yesterday and came upon this:
http://www.mediaite.com/online/glenn-beck-dominates-bestsellers-list-with-childrens-books-too/

I don't really get it....The book is basically about a kid that is told by his grandfather that he is not going to get the gift he wants most for Christmas, a new bike, instead he will get a sweater.

The kid is really mad, and has a dream where hes trapped in the cold snow and all he has to keep him warm is this grandpa sweater.

Well, long story short ... or short story long, he wakes up in the morning and has a tree-bottom full of wonderful gifts, including the bike.
...But he looks all over for the one gift he really wants... the sweater.

I just can't really believe that glenn beck wanted to actually write a wholesome book with no message..... i can't wrap my mind around Expletive deleted. its actually supposed to mean.

Or maybe he just knows that a large part of america will buy any inane crap he puts his authorship on.....

I can't believe you didn't see a message there. You may not like Glenn (I don't) but you have to admit he is a pretty driven guy, and he attributes all of who he is now to that message.
It's kind of like Jesus' parables....just a silly story to the causual observer.

Disclaimer: I saw the adult Christmas sweater show (thanks to my wife), and have not seen the children's book. My appologies if the message was lost in the translation.

O i get the whole mushy, "appreciate what you have that actually means something message" I just felt like he was trying to push some socio-conservative message that i didnt quite get.

The surface moral was not lost on me.... but his politically motivated reason for writing the book is.

1. Wait for economy to collapse to the point where only gifts parents can afford is a book and a sweater.
2. Write book that convinces kids a sweater is a great gift
3. Profit!

Get Fox News viewers to shell out $19.95 to tell them to be grateful for being poor and gullible.

The book sounds like it sucked. You should have bought "The Road" :)

I was looking at Indigo Books for a good Christmas story for my niece's little boy, and I came across Beck's book and quickly read it, among
many others. I couldn't find one Christmas story that I found interesting enough to give as a gift. I ended up getting some
easy readers about dinosaurs and the frog's life cycle that, incidentally, had beautiful illustrations and seemed like they'd hold
a five-year-old's interest.

I must admit that I was surprised it was that Glenn Beck who wrote the sweater story, though.

So the lesson is that if you aren't happy with what you get from authority, then you clearly aren't taking irrational and invented fears seriously enough.

Yep, sounds like Beck.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('anador', 'W')ell, long story short ... or short story long, he wakes up in the morning and has a tree-bottom full of wonderful gifts, including the bike.

A global cooling theme?

I don't know anything about the guy because I don't have a TV and don't read newspapers anymore but I've heard of him - that's for sure!

"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate."
