Book: "Resource Wars" by Michael Klare

Unread postby stu » Wed 08 Dec 2004, 11:30:25

Written just before the 9/11 attacks Resource Wars lays out a future in which the majority of wars will be fought over rapidly dwindling resources essential for the survival of nations economies.

Klare begins by outlining three areas that will experience conflict over oil supplies-The Middle East, The Caspian Sea and The South China Sea. Each of these areas, Klare argues, stands a very high chance of experiencing war due to their unique positions in regards to the supply and transportation of oil.

He then moves on to show how conflict could arise over supplies of water by showing the tension that exists between countries that have a huge reliance of certain rivers. Amongst those highlighted are the Nile, Jordan and Indus.

Finally he shows how conflicts have broken out over other resources in various areas (such as diamonds in Sierra Leone, timber in Borneo etc) before concluding that in the pursuit of industrialisation nation-states are bound to go to war over resources and the alternative to this has to be an organised drive to spread the share of resources between the countries of the world.
