Oil On the Brain by Lisa Margonelli

Unread postby Revi » Wed 07 Mar 2007, 21:25:28

I just picked up a book that is perfect for all of us oil obsessed peak freaks. It's called Oil on the Brain and is a very readable "adventure from the pump to the pipeline" It was just published, in 2007, and goes from the gas station to the refinery to the drilling rig, the SPR and into the NYMEX petroleum exchange. Where I'm at now she roams through Venezuela, Chad, Nigeria and China. So far it's a great read. It takes you to a lot of the places we talk about in these forums.

Anybody else reading it? Let us know what you think.

Just put a hold on it at my library. I am second in line. Thanks for the recommendation.

I found out a bunch of very interesting things from this book. NYMEX only trades a fraction of the world's oil, but all the prices are set there. It's pit session only runs from 10 am to 2:30 pm, so the world's oil price is set during about 4 and a half hours of trading each day. The way things work in the world of oil is explained very well. The way that the "oil colonies" work is perhaps the most interesting part of the book. These places are barely making it, while the oil is pumped out. Most of the money gets stolen by the bureaucrats and never makes it out to the people who live in the oil regions.
