Here is a radio broadcast of the essay by Richard Manning. It discusses the out of balance equation of 10 oil calories to 1 food calorie. And he also discusses of the dangers of the nitrogen cycle, as well as a history of wheat, corn, rice and other plants.

L.A. Sound Posse

This is definately a must listen program. It discusses very important information.

Richard Manning is one of the most underdiscussed authors on this site. He does discuss things in a broader context than we here typically have patience for. But his books are the richer for it.

I have a friend who is going to study biodiesel for the USDA to see if it's worth it to do it. The food thing is a big problem. How are we going to feed 7 billion people? We should be using every drop of oil for only four things now, Forestry, Fishing, Farming and Feedstocks. That is if we intend to keep all of us alive. Everybody else shoud be walking, or riding the electric train or something. Farmers should use the fuel wisely, and only drive to town with a load of food. It's way too late already. We could all use only incoming solar to heat, light and transport ourselves. Save the fossil fuels to do heavy work like plowing and planting. It only makes sense!
