Medical Care in the Age of Bush - Cut Foot in the Wilderness

well, first of all, i was telling this story to a friend yesterday. although he is a tough guy and a Republican, he asked me to not talk about the blood part. see the picture of the foot.
jpg

this happened last Sunday night. i was getting out of the bathtub and thinking about Fava beans, having just tried them for the first time.

i like them ! i remember thinking, "you know, i really don't like Chianti that much", not in the sense of disliking it, just in the sense of preferring cabernet, for example. i had been thinking about the "Fava Beans & Chianti" line in Silence of the Lambs.

shortly thereafter, i stubbed my toe on a piece of sheet metal stored in the hallway. yes, it should have been stored in the closet, and it is now stored in the closet.

it's about .020 thick stainless with a nice sharp burr on it.

my next memory is dancing or hopping or hobbling around the living room, leaving puddles of blood everywhere, slowing getting a grip on the situation. 9 PM, i was tired, not up for a trip to the emergency room. i have an appointment with a GP in about 40 minutes, as i write this.

as you can see from the picture, maybe, the cut is about 3/8 of an inch deep.

i still have feeling in both toes and can wiggle both toes. i am surprised how much it doesn't hurt. i was going stir-crazy so i limped, very carefully, down to a local pool, wrapped it in 2 layers of plastic, and swam for a half hour. then came home and poured alcohol on it.

it is currently wrapped in duct tape and a clean old sock.

anyway, this made me wonder - what if i didn't have access to that GP ? what if it happened out in the woods ?

does the duct tape approach work ?

i am very reluctant to have this thing opened. i have been sitting at the desk and laying down. i think it has started knitting back together. i expect there would be some pain if they open it to swab it out.

i have penicillin, and the consensus was - it kills good stomach bacteria, it isn't indicated unless there is a visible infection.

anyway, off to the doctor ! :-D

What a wuss!

Dude, that's nothing. Clean out that tiny wound and let
it scab. Keep an eye on it. You'll know if it gets infected.
You don't need to do anything beyond that. No need
to take antibiotics, you'll just be making your immune
system weaker.

I only wear shoes when I have to. I also like to hike
& ride bike barefoot and I've dinged by feet (both top and bottoms)
far worse than that. A little over a month ago it was
finally warm enough to go for a hike barefoot at night.
So here I was drunk, hiking at night, and not paying
attention when I jammed by left foot into this giant
root. Could hear the snap as the bone broke in my little
left toe. My poor little toe was really aggravated as this
was like the 3rd time I've broken it over the years. Had
that broken bone feeling again. I completed the walk and
cleaned up the scrape as best I could when I got home.
The entire toe turned purple, and it hurt to walk on for
a few days (it hurt more when I wore shoes) but was fine
after that.

I've also hamburgered both my knees and elbows many times
when I was younger riding bike. Never saw the doc for that
either. The most important thing is you clean out the
wound(s) as soon as you can, and scrub out any trail mix
that may be embedded in the wound. THen let it scab. I've
also gotten good at doing minor surgery on the soles of
my feet when I get a splinter or whatnot.

Another advantage of going barefoot is it's healthy for
you - better for your posture and overall stride, and you're
not supporting a thriving fungal colony in your shoe. Shoes
also last much longer when you only wear them when necessary
and not out of habit.

eric_b covered it pretty well, but to reiterate: Cancel appointment w doctor, ignore toe and go about your daily life.

My policy is skin grows back, but gloves cost money.
