PODebunkedBlog

Unread postby Aaron » Thu 27 Apr 2006, 07:40:31

Some of you will have noticed that I include PODebunkedBlog in our menu.

This is a blog run by one of our members (JohnDenver), who feels PO.com is biased against fuzzy eco-bunnies & other pie-in-the-sky dreamers.

As evidenced by the blog's forum intro:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')A forum where peak oil optimists are free to discuss their views of the peak oil issue without moderation or censorship by peak oil doomers. The forum will operate on a 100% free speech, unmoderated basis.

I decided to include this in our menu to help debunk this idea, that PO.com suppresses PO detractors.

We have seen this critique before...

So in the spirit of cooperation, I'd like to ask a few hundred of our members to visit this forum and post your comments & questions.

He wants an unmoderated forum?

Ok...

I suggest we demonstrate why unmoderated forums quickly become a useless sluggfest...

So jump on in there and show em... :)

Kudos for including the link to POD, even though he has been so unkind on this forum.

As for visiting the blog as you suggest: I did once, and found he equated peak oilists with Al Qaeda.

Sorry, I don't have time for the likes of JD.

I'm a fuzzy eco-bunnie (aww, how cute), and I've never felt PO.com is biased against me.

Just stirring the pot...

And throwing JD some traffic.

And making a point... which seems to have escaped you.

And something else...

It's worth noting that PO.com does not get a perm menu link on JD's blog...

Which seems... umm...

...well there you have it.

Hey Aaron- I appreciate you put JD's blog on the site..."fair and balanced" right? However, don't let this push for equality get to you. Soon you'll be posting blogs and websites from Abiotic Oil and Techno-Geek Fantasists. Then I'll really get grumpy and start to complain.

Well, I hope you don't ruin PODGG -- the signal to noise ratio is currently much better there than it is here.

If you want to drop by and have a serious discussion, however, I welcome your participation.

And of course, as JD points out, the forum is unmoderated so you can say whatever you want. What fun!

I thought of something funny today. The phrase, "Do not accuse the moderators of bias," sort of reminds me of "Do not taunt happy fun ball." It kind of makes one want to taunt happy fun ball, doesn't it?

Or if you like your metaphors biblical, it's like putting the tree of knowledge of good and evil right in the middle of the garden and then saying, "But hey, you're not allowed to eat its fruit."

But don't get me wrong -- I'm not accusing the moderators of bias. I wouldn't do that. :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', ' ')anyone who does not accept the JohnDenver code of technotopian correctiness is banned from his site.

Not true at all, there have been plenty of opponents to POD free to post in the comments. It’s just the Neanderthals who never make an intelligent comment that get banned. Pointless insults are not valid arguments.

The goolge group however, is completely un-moderated.

Pity your scud missile never got of the ground, Aaron. My unmoderated forum continues to function normally -- thus demonstrating that moderators like yourself are unnecessary.

I fought hard to have your link included going forward, but was overruled.

I will however, link POD from my personal blog.

My apologies.

I have been very pleased with the amount of free speech allowed on this board. Infact I haven't personally seen one post removed (yet), and a few of my posts are quite offensive, language wise. Though I guess I am a doomer so it fits in with the whole theme here. ;)

The only thing about this site I wish improved is a newer forum software (one of the few which is heavily optimized) or a newer server. Quite a few times the site does bog down a bit.

I've taken a look at both forums and I still prefer PO.COM. I like moderation such as you describe above, because I don't have time to sift through mountains of trash, which unfortunately is very common on POD. Many POD posters appear to have just joined the discussion but are surprisingly confident about their 'knowledge'. This overconfidence of the uninformed reduces the general quality of the discussion. People should read (alot) first before posting and at POD this does not seem to be the general rule.

Being unmoderated is not a strong selling point. I cheer the efforts of PO.COM moderators. I haven't seen any topic on PO.COM that couldn't be discussed freely and I find the level flame and yah-naying to be comfortably low.

POD sometimes depresses me. It seems to be used as a 'haven' for people who have decided that objectivity and realism is too much for them. As such, POD has more cult status than PO.COM.

By the way, I recommend you read the comments on JD's 300th posting:

JD's 300th post

There's a guy calling himself alan who has something interesting to say to JD.
