one quadrillion dollars

Unread postby smiley » Sat 21 May 2005, 04:57:17

Just say it once:"one quadrillion dollars". Bet you have never said that before. :) And yet it is a real number, it is not the savings account of Dagobert Duck.

This is the amount of derivate and security trades which were cleared by the dtcc last year.

Imagine that, 4.5 trillion a day. In just two days the equivalent of the whole US GDP is traded on this market. It is one thousand times the size of the entire oil market. It is just unbelievable. 8O

The thought that something could go wrong in this market, makes the hair at the back of my neck stand up. Warren Buffet called this market a financial weapon of mass destruction. If I just look at these numbers I can only say he's right.

one quadrillion = 1,000,000,000,000,000
Life results from the non-random selection of randomly generated replicators

"There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers."

My apologies if this is a stupid question, but who exactly is doing all this trading and where is the money coming from? Is this private traders, national governments or what?

I think the answer lies near the bottom of the article:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')bout DTCC
Through its subsidiaries, DTCC provides clearance, settlement and information services for equities, corporate and municipal bonds, government and mortgage-backed securities and over-the-counter derivatives. DTCC's depository also provides custody and asset servicing for more than two million securities issues from the United States and 100 other countries and territories. In addition, DTCC is a leading processor of mutual funds and insurance transactions, linking funds and carriers with their distribution networks. DTCC has operating facilities in multiple locations in the United States and overseas. For more information on DTCC

In short, anybody, any bank, any governmental agency that deals with money.
