as a compost ingredient, sawdust is outstanding. Small size and high carbon, low density, easily transported, non-hazardous, high in potassium, can be stored for years until you need it, even gets better with age. Mixed with high nitrogen materials, especially animal manures (think feedlot), can yield a usable product in a short time. Stay away from Walnut, however, it will kill your garden. For birds, cherry is a hazard, makes them sick or something. Also avoid pressure treated lumber sawdust.
It can be compressed into blocks or pellets for use in wood burning stoves and other biomass combustion projects, offering energy value.
