The new varminter at 100 yards

Unread postby Specop_007 » Sat 09 Jul 2005, 23:14:53

Heres some range pics of the new build I finished up. Shes good enough for varmint use I think. The small squares are 1/4 inch, the thicker lined squares are 1 inch. Using Black Hills 77 grain HP ammo I can (almost) consistently hold 1/4" groups at 100 yards. The top pics are all Black Hills 77 grain HP, the second to last is Black Hills 50 grain V-Max, the bottom is Black Hills 60 grain V-max.

I'm pretty happy with the results, except I never could hit that damned dime. :-D

Your three to five shot strings look pretty good
(I assume these are from a bench). However, I
never base the accuracy of a particular rifle on the
basis of such small strings.

These small strings are useful to identify if there
is potential, or lack thereof. But, shoot some 20-shot
strings and see what the group size is. If they're
still within about 3/4 inch extreeme spread, then you
are good for shooting most varmints (except mice)
at 200 yards or more.

It won't win benchrest competitions though (at least with
those loads.

By the way, what caliber (6mm or .25 ) and cartridge?

A 77 gr. bullet is too heavy for a .223. (Unless you have an
extreemely fast twist rate.

I agree I need more shots in a group to really see how its working. But, I wont worry about that till I work up some good handloads for it. Right now this is just factory and making sure it isnt shooting all over the damned place.

Its a standard AR15, .223/5.56. I had them ream the chamber as a Wylde chamber so it will handle either .223 or 5.56 loads equally well, although the inherint accuracy of .223 means thats usually what I shoot. Its a Kreiger 22" stainless with 1-8 twist.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('k_semler', '8')O You got sub MOA!! DAMN!! 8O

Hell man, theres 3 pictures there that are damned near 1/4 MOA (Except for the flyers). 8)

The real scary stuff? This was from a bipod (Not sandbags), on a day with a 5-10 MPG crosswind using factory ammo.

If I work up some good handloads for the rifle and get some sandbags and go out on a calm day I shoudl be able to shoot 1 ragged hole groups all day long.
Time will tell. :)

Who says semi autos cant shoot as well as a bolt gun? :P
