Fuel prices headed for the moon

BELIZE CITY, Thu, Jun. 16, 2005

Gas prices have increased again, and according to gas station outlet personnel with whom we spoke, a majority has said that the new prices came into effect on Wednesday, June 15.

The new gas prices coming from the pumps around the country of Belize are: In Belize City, gas prices went up as follows - premium, $8.85 cents per gallon, an increase of .6 cents, from the old price, $8.79 cents; diesel, $6.41 cents per gallon, an increase of .23 cents from the old price, $6.18; regular, $8.52 per gallon, an increase of .8 cents from the old price, $8.44.

The increase in the other districts saw similar increases, they are:

Punta Gorda - premium, $9.07 per gallon, from the old price, $9.01; diesel, $6.63 per gallon, from the old price, $6.40; regular, $8.74 per gallon, from the old price, 8.66.

Note: In Punta Gorda, kerosene is $5.98 per gallon, an increase of .22 cents from its old price, $5.76.

Orange Walk - premium, $8.92 per gallon, from its old price, $8.86; diesel, $6.48 per gallon, from the old price, $6.25; regular, $8.59 per gallon, from the old price of $8.51; kerosene, $5.83 per gallon, from the old price, $5.61.

Corozal - premium, $8.95 per gallon, from its old price of 8.89; diesel, $6.50 per gallon, from its old price of $6.27; regular, $8.60 per gallon, up from the old price, $8.52; kerosene, $5.85 per gallon, old price $5.63.

San Ignacio, Cayo, prices were similar to those of Corozal, except that its regular gas price increase differed by one cent - regular, $8.61 per gallon from its old price, $8.53.

We were unable to get a quote from Dangriga.

Even at press-time tonight, GOB had not sent us a press release on the increases.

Some gas stations representatives with whom we spoke said that they received a call on Tuesday, June 14, from a Texaco representative informing them of the new prices.

A spokesperson said that he was informed by his employer on Monday night that the new prices were coming into effect on Wednesday, June 15, and he made the changes sometime around Monday night.

Currency and Exchange Rate
The currency unit is the Belize dollar (Bz.$). The Belize dollar has been pegged to the U.S. dollar at a rate of Bz.$2.00 to U.S.$1.00 since May 1976.

So if the Belize dollar is equal to USD 2, gas there is cheaper than here in the EU!

It's all a matter of what your used to...

Also Belezians probly earn less than Europeans, so the gas increase hurts more.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Probably a good way to end up in the stew pot.

Tell us, do Belizeans eat their Westerners how they come, or is there a period of feeding us on sweet potatoes first to improve the flavor?
