Professional Beach Volleyball is a sport like baseball or football where the pros who make the big bucks are well into their 20's and early 30's. It puts a premium on experience, unlike, say running or swimming which is just about in-born skill and physical conditioning. My daughter, who is 24, is playing her first pro tourney tomorrow morning right here in San Diego. I've got butterflies just thinking about it!

Well she played in her first pro tournament and they went down 2 games to none. My daughter was clearly a stronger player than her partner even though she was a rookie and the partner wasn't. The little sand court looks to be smaller than the College courts she's used to. The opponent girls were using her height against her and hitting high at her hands, balls that clearly would have gone out of bounds - the experience and strategy factor, I guess. Good money to be made in this sport, underwritten by car companies and beer makers.

Now she's off tomorrow with a pro contract for expenses and 400 Euros a month to play in Germany for the next nine months. She's so strong, but I've been listneing to the CD she made before catching her flight of music by Bjork. The music is an expression of tender feminine feeling mixed with artistry and courage. I told her that I thought the music was a kind of feminine version of Tom Waits. I will miss her. She is so up on Europe. She knows about peak oil and has gotten a mixture of teary and angry with me about it. I back off of course. And pray.
