Foster Miller developed a new robotic soldier for the U.S. military. The Special Weapons Observation Reconnaissance Detection Systems, or SWORDS, will be the first armed robotic vehicles to see combat, years ahead of the larger Future Combat System vehicles under development at Lockheed and General Dynamics. The robot operates on lithium ion batters, and can run for 1 to 4 hours at a time, depending on the mission. Operators of SWORDS work the robot using a 30-pound control unit that has two joysticks, and a handful of buttons and a video screen. It is expected that the robot eventually will have a "Gameboy" type of controller hooked up to virtual reality goggles.
