Arteriocyte Produces Artificial Blood, Sends to FDA

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n the wildly popular HBO show “True Blood”, the creation of synthetic blood allows vampires to join the human society as they no longer need to feed on real, human blood. And while vampires are still only found in the fictional world, artificial blood is making its way into the real world. Known somewhat morbidly as “blood pharming”, this idea looks promising as a viable alternative to producing human blood without the human!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')k, so what’s the good news? Two years ago, DARPA awarded a $1.95 million grant to a Cleveland company called Arteriocyte, which was developing technology that could quickly transform stem cells into red blood cells. The idea was to develop a system that could produce an almost limitless amount of universal donor blood (O-negative) in remote areas. And earlier this month, Arteriocyte submitted samples of their artificially produced blood to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), seeking approval before making the technology available to both the civilian and military sectors. While we have reported attempts by other companies to produce artificial blood, Arteriocyte is clearly ahead of the pack.

Sooner or later, Science will be able to produce optimally DNA-sequenced sperms, eggs and provide an artificial womb for them to grow in. What are people going to DO with themselves?

Recent Advances in Developing Artificial Uteruses -- Guest Article

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t’s only a prototype now, but a working one that shows promise and possibility. Scientists and researchers at the Cornell University's Centre for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility have succeeded in taking cells from the endometrium, the lining of the womb, and growing them in a lab using hormones and other growth factors. Tests have already been run using fetuses not used in IVF procedures, and they have shown that they’re able to attach themselves to the lining of the artificial womb. Further trials will prove the viability of this concept, but for now, the researchers are limited by IVF regulations.

Ethical aspects raise their ugly head and threaten to prevent progress in this field; on the one hand, you have abortion issues – while women are permitted to undergo an abortion legally now because the fetus is within their bodies, when they’re outside and growing in an artificial womb, will abortion amount to murder? Also, artificial wombs when combined with cloning technology are conceptually capable of allowing reproduction without involving the female factor. How far will people go to exploit this if it becomes a reality?

I don't see the reproductive organs as being any more complex than other organs (excepting the brain, spinal column and nervous system). If you learn how to clone a liver or pancreas, then it's probably not going to be a stretch to create a laboratory uterus. And then, instead of being "born", we can be "decanted", as first described by Huxley in Brave New World.
