The planet needs a break. I hope 6B will die soon. Unfortunately I can only see BAU. Shale gas, tar sand, coal to liquid, efficiency gains and much more. It looks like it's gonna take another 50 years before more die than are born. I hope I'm still gonna be around to see the start of it, kind of going to the grave knowing that nature finally kicked back. Would allow me to rest in peace.

I believe that we can, should, and eventually will reduce the ecological impact of our lives by a factor of ten or so at the same time improving our well being and quality of life. I guess that makes me a non-doomer.

I would describe someone who believes in the continuation of business as usual and lives accordingly as a doom facilitator.

I don't believe in a fast crash but I do think things will look different in the future. The US will not be as "glamorous" as it is now.

I didnt vote because your poll is completely biased...your categories are completed skewed.

You need to make it a bit more fine grained.

Doomer..fast crash, catastrophe imminent. Mad max. Die Off.

Peaker... Long emergency BAU will evolve into a longer and slow decline, standards of living fall significantly over long haul..(IE generational decline)

Non Doomer...but BAU cannot continue over the longer haul without adjustments to standards of living.

Cornucopian BAU until technology/conservation evolves to replace declines in Fossil Fuel usage

Utopian Technology ramps to completely save us from Fossil Fuel decline AND technology releases us from its use.

I suggest changing the poll for any real read on things here.

Does anyone here NOT want BAU to continue? I mean seriously? Including that in your poll also skews it. I'd add that changing BAU will be necessary but having it part of your poll is nothing short of hoping more folks vote for the "doomer" part so you can say i told you so!

The Delusion Revolution is still in full force. I am in daily amazement with how long "wishfull thinking" can prop up BAU. My mother thinks giving homes to poor people was the proximate cause of the collapse in 2008. It's just an example. If one believes homes for poor people caused it, then one doesn't have to admit that we were (are) living outside of our means.

I watched some of the episodes of Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura yesterday. It's interesting to me how easy it is for people to believe that crap. It shouldn't surprise me. It is easier than believing that our current values are messed up. I loved the part in the "Global Warming" episode where Jesse wanted us to "follow the money." He thought since Murice Strong had a chance to make billions off of AGW, he must have cooked all this up. I wanted to come through he TV at take down a Navy Seal at that point. "Billions? Is that where the money is? How about the TRILLIONS Coal Fired Power and Oil Companies stand to lose."

BAU will stand as long as we can force it to. Slow crash.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dsula', 'T')he planet needs a break. I hope 6B will die soon.

But if you hope 6B die soon, why do you want to stick around? Or are you both wanting to stick around and hoping to die soon? Or is it someone else who you hope dies soon?

I'm the 4th kind of doomer. Even though I know I will die soon if it happens soon. Them's the breaks.

I'm a Doomer but I think Mad Max fantasies are fictional (and silly). [smilie=5propeller.gif]

I didn't bother with his poll either. It's silly. According to your categories, I guess I'm a doomer, but I see the BAU thing as a bit a red herring. BAU as we know it is not normality, it's a bubble. So after a painful transition, we will then enter some form of genuine BAU.
What we think, we become.

I'm ambivalent about BAU. I don't think anyone can be completely against BAU without being a raging hypocrite. Calling people on that has gotten me in trouble before, but I firmly believe that. So I can be critical of McMansions and Hummers, but at the same time, I will concede that I genuinely appreciate my gadgets, entertainment on demand, high speed internet, modern medicine, etc... So I'll never be the perfect model of sustainability. I'm just not that fundamentalist about it. I think some aspects of modern life are worth trying to hold onto, even if it's a lost-cause in the long-run.

I don't think there will be a catastrophy but there will be adjustment.

Price of oil will increase but not suddenly because as we have seen in the past people always adjusted and will again adjust accordingly. So the consumption will decrease and at some expensive price point, consumption will stabilize until price starts to increase again

There will be definitely die offs and the population will decrease especially in Africa, cars will be much smaller and more efficient, every kind of energy and kind of food will be much more expensive. Houses will become smaller engines will be smaller, less air travel and armies will lack the airplanes.

I believe once the energy industry believes oil price is never to decrease or say never to fall below $100, it is at that confidence level and time that we will see massive investments in oil and gas industry. Keep in mind that there are many off shore oil projects that are not worked on because oil needs to be at least X amount. The higher the X price the more projects to come to life.

There will be adjustment but not a chaos, not a war. Just a gradual adjustment.

I want business as usual to continue for as long as possible, but I don't think it will.

I guess I am hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

Industrial civilization is on it's last legs.

It's like driving an old car. Anything we get out of it is gravy, but if it breaks down it could be too expensive to fix, so you might want to have a bike as a backup vehicle.

I don't want BAU to continue. What I want is business (and individuals and goverments) to change to a more sustainable basis and to power down - so that the 2nd half of the oil age can be managed without things falling apart. Unfortunately I think that this will only be done on a small scale (by people like Ludi) so BAU will continue until such time as the economy hits the rails or energy supplies start to dry up.
We should teach our children the 4-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejoice.

I think you should read this...BAU will be the usual business of change, maybe massive change, but one thing is for sure - the solution is ready and people like you are almost begging for it now...

http://www.newswithviews.com/community_ ... licing.htm

“Unfortunately, because of the reduction of influence exerted neighbors, the extended family and even the family, social control is now often more dependent on external control, than on internal self-control.

Oh, darn, he says. Since that “unfortunate” breakdown of conscience and the family structure, the social order is now dependent on “external control.” Read that, “The State.” ”

Yes, it was a very unfortunate thing that happened.

I think the future will be one of less control, not more. The police won't be able to control the situation, community policing or not. I guess I'm a doomer.

I disagree. The very fact that centralstump is here tells me one glaring fact. He is able to think for himself and make decisions on his own. He isn't one of the "sheeple".

BAU == Business as Usual = Pretense & News Reporting that is Primarily Dishonest

Peak Oil has provided & will continue to provide numerous opportunities for our elected leaders & news media to Practice their Pretense.

in that sense, we'll have business as usual.
