The perfect food: What is it?

Unread postby RazorsEdge » Wed 09 Mar 2005, 20:20:29

Hello, long time reader, first time poster.

Through many of the documents that I have read I have a good idea of how to take care of water for storage situations. However, I was curious to know if anyone has a good idea on a food that is perfect for survival situations. Such a food would have these traits:

* Does not require heating, can eat it straight (likely canned?)
* Will last 5-10 years
* Extremely nutritious and calorie rich
* Relatively light-weight
* Taste does not matter - when you are hungry even dung will taste good
* Will not get moldy or stale in high temperatures

The problem with most food I've seen so far is they are either not convenient to eat (have to cook) or they do not contain enough nutrients. Some would say to have multi-vitamins on hand but those typically have a very short expiration date.

True, but if I can get the cash together I can buy several years worth of MRE's until things cool down.

Thanks for the idea on MRE's! They look exactly like what I was looking for!

Beer... dark, heavy thick, beer. If it was good enough for fasting monks in Germany, it's good enough for me. :wink:

Honey. It's good, healthy, complete and can last almost forever. High calories too, so you don't need much to stay (barely lol) alive.
Potatoes are good, but they need to be cooked.

The ideal survival food is a combination of:
1) Nuts
2) Starchy food (bread, biscuits, potato, rice)
3) Fresh veg or fruit for vitamins

Starchy food is considered a staple in most places, and about the last food that people will run out of. You can expect to be able to acquire it anywhere unless there's serious starvation around.

Fresh veg or fruit is something that doesn't keep. You may want to consider hoarding vitamins, but I think it's easier to cultivate your own.

Nuts is something that is worth hoarding, unless you live in or next to a forest of nut-producing trees (pine trees, for example).

Complete? I have my doubts that you can live off of just honey.
Maybe you have a different meaning for "complete" but I read that as "all you need".
