Took My Pet Down By The River This Weekend

Unread postby mattduke » Mon 22 Jun 2009, 12:14:20

I drove for an hour to get as far away from people as possible. I was having a nice walk along the trail. The animal was having fun, sniffing about and swimming. Then a bureaucrat in a gunboat came full-throttle out of nowhere, swooped in and bullhorned me, commanding me to put the pet on a leash. WTF?

Did you comply like a good little unit? Do what they say Mattduke, and then when you're fairly sure they're gone for good, unleash him again. Play their game, only play it better. This is what I do whenever I have a run in with the cops or others on power trips...be a good little unit...till they're outta sight. Try it, It's fun. Certainly don't get all wound up about it even if it was in your own little slice of heaven, far from the maddening crowd.

I'll give it a try. Even if the original poster had been walking his dog in a desolate wilderness in the rapidly shrinking Arctic, a child could have wandered by and the dog could have bitten that child! We need leash laws in uninhabited wilderness now!

Wow.. Loose dog!! I am surprised they didn't raise the threat level to orange.

+1 LOL

Plus, when peak oil occurs and people are starving, the child might have bitten the dog!

At least this was a benign OP. I first thought the OP was going to say he took his pet down by the river to put it down. When I read the subject I was wondering if he'd take his wife down by the river too when she gets too old :P

To Hell with them, walk your dog!

Unless your dog is a really vicious type that you can't trust around people at all, I can't see why it would have to be leashed in such a location - how many other souls do you run into on a walk there, anyway?

I agree with Forlorn Hope - you can put the leash on just as the boat comes around, then take it off. Another thought, do these guys patrol the area 24/7? If not, walk your dog when they're not as likely to make an appearance. In my city, dogs aren't supposed to be off leash in school yards, parks, etc. or you face a fine. But the bylaw officers only patrol during the daytime - so early morning and later in the evening you can get away with it.

Well, considering your statement that you were walking along "the trail", which in my mind suggests a constructed path intended specifically for such use, this implies that you were in fact in a place designated as a public commons, which means that yes, you are subject to any leash restrictions as may be imposed in public areas in your corner of the world.

I was walking my dog on a public trail the other week (on the lead) and as a family passed me, a young dog approached and got excited by my dog. The dog then upended a child, ran off and came back again, whereupon the father of the upended child hoofed the dog down the trail.

Then the owner arrived, oblivious to what had happened. I managed to stop the father beating him up.

Don't assume your dog will be rational on a trail when it meets another dog.

I would have shouted to the boat that I would like to see some proper ID and if by chance he wasn't overcome with shock and awe and did pull the boat up and got out to present proper credentials I would have said "thanks but it's not my dog have a nice day"

I always carry a slip-on lead when hiking with my dog. She is trustworthy around people but responds quite vigorously if challenged by another animal. The problem I have is that the challenges usually come from the little dogs like the terriers and she spares them no quarter. She hasn't injured any dog, but people tend to get very upset .

No they just can't shoot a dog. Then you could report him for cruelty to animals. Everything has channels you have to go through. especialy for the gov types.
