I think it is cool, but ya... he deserved to be arrested for that. That is state property paid for by the taxpayer and he destroyed it. While I appreciate and respect his creativity, there are just something you shouldn't do.

Apparently they're not public property. They belong to a contractor. The kid allegedly destroyed three barrels. From a quick internet search it looks like they sell for about $50 each. Hopefully the thing will have a good ending. They'll plead the kid down to some community service and sell the sculpture for $1000.

I get that the kid stole the barrels and that's not right, but seriously JRM. How many cities around the country are paying tens of thousands of dollars commissioning crappy outdoor art pieces that aren't a tenth that inventive? They really need to plead the kid down to some minor infraction like vandalism and sentence him to 20 hours of community service making more art for the city.

spg, i am not saying to throw the entire book at him, but the laws of civilization exist for a reason. If everyone did what they wanted without fear of having to pay for their crime, then we would have anarchy.

You can't just make different rules for different people. One rule for all.

First, he should set up a non-profit entity established for the purpose of paying his legal expenses, and paying for all fines and restitution .... and I'd gladly donate.

Second, he should bootstrap all of the publicity he's receiving, and go into business of creating art monsters to be sold to the public at a significant profit.

It's true. When I was a teenager the big thing was to load in the back of pickup trucks on Haloween, steal pumpkins off peoples porches, and then dump them in a huge pile in the principal's front yard. The local cops knew we did it and could care less. The only time we got in any sort of trouble was when a lady had put some sort of antique candleholder in her pumpkin and got all upset. We had to return the candleholder. Now a days the cops would probably run kids in for that sort of thing.

Which they would deserve. I did not participate in illegal activities as teenager and I find the adage a kid will be a kid, truely sickening. A banker will be a banker, a politician will be a politician. Personal responsibility is something parents need to teach their children, I especially believe that if a parent raises a child that does stuff like this, the parent should be held responsible with the child. Perhaps that will help make people think before popping out children like they should be popping breath mints. This way they can spend the time raising a child with a moral compass.

Ohh for pete sake. I was valedictorian and most likely to succeed. I was at work by 7 am every day on the weekends during high school. I graduated summa cum laude from undergrad and became a doctor. I think I got the personal responsibility thing. Innocent mischief and personal responsibility aren't mutually exclusive concepts. There is no particular societal benefit in obsessive conformity.
