The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Teclo, the truth is farming is much harder for me than paper shifting or building a real-time software. All those nasty insects and yes I live in tropical climate zones. The temparature is 33 Celcius in the shade and 44 Celcious in the open.

However, I learnt something lesson from Gogota. He practiced Fukuoka farming method. He don't realized it but he do it. :o Fruit trees coexisted with corn. Plant wild vegetables and leave it alone. Let the sun and rain finish the job. He need to work only 3 hours a day and take long long rest in rainy season without going hungry. But he cannot buy VCD, TV or new refrigrator any more. :(

No rat race for him but not everyone can appreciate the type of living. Some people here prefer to put a bullet through their own head rather than eat some bugs like "Golden snail", high protein Sago worms, grasshoppers. Sometimes the food is there but nobody realized it, such as wild ferns, delicious kangkung, tapioca leave. For minor injuries, Aloe Vera can be used with wonderful result. Just stuck it in a flower pot and put some leaveover rice or meat on it and it will grow bigger and bigger. Pandan leave can be cooked with rice to made the rice taste nicer.

BabyPeanut , I hope your rats is big enough to feed the cats . You eats the cats. Cockroach traps can be used to trap cockroach and they can be used to feed the chickens. Rats can be trapped and be killed to mixed with compose food to produce gazillions maggots for chicken.

I accidently discovered that after I accidently leave 1 kg of fresh beef near the storeroom and forget to cook it during Chinese New Year reunion dinner and found my parents's chickens having a feast over there a few days later. I found out that with food to maggots method , the chicken taste nicer. However please put it far away from your house. Kangkung vegetables are even easier to grow just dump all the chicken shits in a 10X10 metres area and stuck your kangkung stub there. Please come back in 2 weeks time.

However, currently I am back to rat race as it pay well in monetary term. With the same income, I can eat 10 or more chickens/50 kilogrammes of vegetables a day instead of 0.5 chicken a week. Back to the race track...

Fukuoka teaching here. Nature will teach you.

but. the first thing the gov will do is guarantee the food supply

first to go will be non-productive jobs, producing meaningless things we don't need
Secondly our factories are run to max. consumption and hence profits, not run to what we actually need

We won't suddenly run out of food, that will take years if we fail to handle
peak oil creatively, non-stupidly

But cut out the excess consumption/production and we still have need for things, and can do it in a lot less time

Give people the basics are there will be no panic
